Grünberg: Old Town, Brunnental and Water History

Grünberg combines historic townscapes with discoveries related to water and nature. The Old Town and Grünberg’s History

Anyone interested in the town’s development will find several ways to explore the subject at the Museum im Spital Grünberg: it presents the history of the town centre and its districts, as well as the development and significance of Grünberg’s monasteries and hospitals, particularly the Antonite monastery. A permanent exhibition at the museum is devoted to the Amazon rainforest and offers insights into the themes of Koch-Grünberg’s four expeditions to South America between 1898 and 1924. The Thieves’ Tower offers another perspective on the town’s history: built around 1300 as part of the town fortifications, it has served as an observation tower since its restoration. A small exhibition inside explains the history of the fortifications. At the Guild House in Judengasse, you can see original exhibits related to historic guilds and crafts; visits are possible by appointment.

The historic technology behind the water supply is also a subject here. Exhibitions in the historic machine house and the former Stadtmühle waterworks explain how fresh spring water was pumped uphill into the old town more than 600 years ago. Brunnental is a local recreation area; from 1901, the Grünberg tourist association laid paths there. In 1908, it acquired land on the side opposite the town and made it accessible by paths.
