Those interested in the history of the town will find a range of features to look out for individually while exploring the old town.

Digital Tours of Babenhausen

Both are accessed via the Actionbound app; you will need an internet-enabled device and the app. The “Remembrance Culture in Babenhausen” tour takes about 70 minutes through the town centre and starts at the market square. It is generally aimed at adults and people interested in history, and is also suitable for history lessons with school classes. Darmstadt-Dieburg as a Wider Regional Setting

The wider travel destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg encompasses a range of natural landscapes: the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Lower Main Plain, the Messel Hills, the Reinheim Hills, the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandstone Odenwald. In the district, the Bergstraße forms a striking transition between the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. A special cultural and natural attraction is the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site: this fossil site is known for its uniquely preserved and diverse fossils, which document the history of Earth’s development 47 million years ago. The visitor centre presents the history and significance of Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The district’s nature and cycling trails also offer their own highlights. Reinheimer Teich Nature Reserve lies in the northwestern foothills of the Odenwald, is surrounded by meadows and fields, and can be explored along a circular trail or from one of its many benches. Pfungstädter Moor consists of three parts, covers around 103 hectares and can be explored on designated paths. Darmstadt-Dieburg has an extensive network of well-marked routes for hiking, walking and Nordic walking. The family cycling route runs for around 40 kilometres from Erzhausen to Seeheim-Jugenheim. Themed cycling routes follow the small rivers Modau and Gersprenz; there is also the Leisure Cycling Route and the Family Cycling Route.

Seasonal activities may also be a factor in regional planning: from September to October, the town of Groß-Umstadt offers group tours with Rainer Bausch focused on the fruit and wine harvest, including a wine tasting. Dates and booking arrangements may change; check them in advance for your preferred date.
