Neuwerk Island: A Nature Experience in the Wadden Sea
Accommodation in Neuwerk Island
Neuwerk Island is a marsh island surrounded by sandy tidal flats and belongs to Zone II of the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. Anyone planning a trip here can combine nature, paths, water and island history. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, the desired daily activities are therefore particularly important: Would you like to walk along the dyke, get to know the Wadden Sea, discover historic buildings or go swimming in the sea in summer?
Dyke Paths, Wadden Sea and National Park
Visitors can walk along the dyke around Neuwerk Island and along the Mittelweg trail while experiencing the national park nature trail. The Neuwerk National Park House in the centre of the island is a good starting point, just 200 m from Neuwerk Tower. The exhibition provides insights into the island’s history and the formation of the Wadden Sea. At a large tidal basin, visitors can experience the ebb and flow of the tide at close hand.
The local spatial protection regulations are also part of getting oriented on site. The Ostvorland area is designated as Zone I and may be entered only via the marked path in order to protect the birds and salt-marsh vegetation. Anyone wishing to explore the salt marshes, tidal flats and island more closely can register for a guided tour directly at the exhibition or by telephone at the National Park House. This allows the stay to be organised according to individual interests, with independent walks or a guided exploration.
Lighthouse, Cemetery and Island Crafts
One of the notable historic destinations is Neuwerk Lighthouse. It was completed in 1310 and is Hamburg’s oldest building. The Cemetery of the Nameless commemorates nameless sailors whose bodies have been buried there since 1319. Another island landmark is the rebuilt Ostbake beacon, which is considered a popular photo opportunity.
The exhibition collection at “Haus Bernstein” and the NEUWERKSTATT offer further insights. The exhibition collection is one of the island’s attractions, while textiles with Neuwerk motifs are printed on site at the NEUWERKSTATT. This means cultural discoveries can also have their place when the day’s travel plans are not devoted exclusively to paths and the Wadden Sea.
Swimming and Tide-Dependent Travel
During the summer months, Neuwerk offers good opportunities for swimming in the sea. The Neuwerk Island bathing area, Anleger, is located on the western shore in the area of the Elbe–Neuwerk shipping channel and the Hundebalje tidal creek. The approximately 200 m long beach is secured on the landward side by stone groynes and wooden planks. Anyone planning to go swimming should take this part of the island into account when organising their trip.
Depending on the tide, visitors can reach Neuwerk Island on foot, by ship from April to October from the Alte Liebe harbour, or by horse-drawn wagons across the tidal flats. Experienced riders can also arrive on horseback. These different options make the journey an important part of planning accommodation. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth defining your own priorities: hiking trails and the national park, historic destinations, swimming in summer or a tide-dependent arrival on the island.
