Castle Park and Marga Garden City
In Castle Park in Senftenberg town centre, between the market square and the town harbour, you’ll find the Museum of Senftenberg Castle and Fortress and the Lausitz Art Collection. The collection in the castle comprises more than 2,500 works by over 130 painters, graphic artists and sculptors. It also includes works by Ernst Barlach and Carl Lohse. The castle’s history also reaches further back: the Renaissance complex was built on the foundations of a medieval castle in the 16th century to secure the Saxon border. Marga Garden City in the district of Brieske offers a different glimpse into history. It was created in the early 20th century in the late Art Nouveau style as a residential settlement for workers of Ilse Bergbau AG and is considered Germany’s oldest garden city. Visitors can explore its history on foot or by bicycle at eleven stops; a modern visitor experience and wayfinding system accompanies the tour.
Around the lake: cycle route and harbour
The circular route around Lake Senftenberg is 18 kilometres long and is recommended for cyclists. This provides a clear guide for planning your day. If you don’t want to cycle the entire route, you can take the passenger boat “Santa Barbara”, which operates on the lake and allows cyclists to shorten part of the journey. The Seenland Route starts at Senftenberg town harbour. There is also a viewing balcony there, with a view of the lake.
The town harbour has moorings for up to 120 leisure boats, along with the associated service facilities. The harbour is therefore also of interest to visitors looking for a holiday centred on the water. Nearby, the Koschen Canal connects Lake Senftenberg with Lake Geierswalde. It is the first navigable waterway in the Lusatian Lake District.
