Views of rolling hills and post-mining landscapes
From the Schipkau rooftop balcony, you can see the Kamenz Hills to the southeast, including Hutberg and Hennersdorfer Berg. The Hörlitz observation tower offers a different panoramic view. It stands in the municipality of Schipkau, is 27 metres high and made of steel; its design is intended to evoke a former water tower. From there, the view stretches across Hörlitz and Senftenberg, the EuroSpeedway Lausitz and the post-mining landscape of the former Meuro open-cast mine, as far as the Saxon uplands.
Routes with different themes
The Niederlausitz Mining Tour, around 510 kilometres long, passes through the municipality of Schipkau. The Fürst-Pückler-Weg also runs through the municipality. In 2006, it was awarded four stars by the ADFC (German Cyclists’ Association) and covers more than 500 kilometres through the historical eras of Lusatia. This means a mining tour and a route through Lusatia’s history offer two distinct themes.
Cycling and hiking trails around Lake Drochow invite you to spend time there. Here, the idea of travelling on foot or by bike is paired with a specific destination by the lake, while the two long-distance routes offer a different dimension for planning, with their lengths and individual themes.
Church architecture in Klettwitz
Klettwitz Church brings together several striking architectural details. It was extensively remodelled and enlarged from 1905 to 1907 to designs by Berlin architect Wilhelm Blaue and government architect Carl Weber. A particularly notable feature is the faux coffered ceiling dating from 1906, with its 91 different motifs. A stone chapel has been preserved as the church’s entrance hall. The organ loft houses the 970th organ built by royal court organ builder Wilhelm Sauer of Frankfurt/Oder; it has 12 stops.
The wider setting: Oberspreewald-Lausitz
In the south of the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district, the flooding of former open-cast mines is creating a waterscape with more than 20 artificial lakes: the Lusatian Lake District. The district has hiking routes ranging from 4 to 32 km, as well as cycling routes at least 40 km long. These include independent or guided multi-day tours, with good places to stop and eat along the way.
More than 580 km of signposted cycling routes connect the regions between the Spreewald and the Kmehlen Hills, as well as linking southern Brandenburg with Saxony and northern Brandenburg on a regional scale. Lübbenau/Spreewald also adds a cultural highlight to the district: its historic old town includes a neoclassical palace ensemble. Landscape, tours and architecture therefore appeal to different interests that you can weigh up when planning your own trip.
