The Pigeon Tower: architectural history and present-day use

The Pigeon Tower was probably built around 1830 from red and yellow bricks, at the center of the manor estate. It was damaged during the Second World War and subsequently fell into disrepair. Starting in 2006, the Fredersdorf local history association gradually rebuilt the tower. The building thus brings together early architectural history and a much later chapter in the work of a local association. The different brick colors also give the structure a distinctive appearance.

Small, changing exhibitions are now being held temporarily in the Pigeon Tower at the manor, at Ernst-Thälmann-Straße 30, while a museum solution is being sought. For visits to the manor, the local history association lists the first and third Monday of each month from 1 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. Before you travel, check whether these times apply to your chosen date.

Castle Park and birdwatching

The paths in the Castle Park offer an opportunity to observe native songbirds and water birds. The Fließbrücke (stream bridge) between the Fredersdorf and Vogelsdorf districts is a good starting point. For an outing with children, birdwatching can be a way to draw their attention to the surroundings, without the need for a set program.

Another point of reference is the unpaved cycle and footpath from Schöneicher Allee, across the Mühlenfließ, to the old village center of Vogelsdorf. Native songbirds and water birds can also be observed along this route. The Castle Park and Fließbrücke, and the path with its named landmarks, offer different starting points for planning: in one case, the park is the focus; in the other, the route between Schöneicher Allee and Vogelsdorf.

Märkisch-Oderland also offers interesting cycling routes, including the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route and the Oderbruchbahn Cycle Route. The main route of the Oderbruchbahn Cycle Route runs from Fürstenwalde/Spree or, alternatively, from Müncheberg to Wriezen. It passes through the quiet landscape of the Oderbruch and combines the cycling trip with the history of rail transport and the early 20th century.
