Berlin-Neukölln offers different ways to explore the history of technology, art, architecture and designed landscapes. The Britzer Mühle represents wind power and traditional milling, the Hufeisensiedlung represents classical modernism, and Britzer Garten is defined by its lake, gardens and park railway. When planning a stay, it’s worth choosing your focus first: would you rather discover historic sites and exhibitions, or make time for a large park?

Windmill, Art and Architecture

The Britzer Mühle is a twelve-sided windmill dating from 1865 and one of Berlin’s last fully operational windmills. It still mills flour using wind power; visitors can learn about its milling machinery and history. Its design, age and continued operation offer a tangible way to explore the history of technology: its function is as much a part of its character as its history.

The gallery in Körnerpark presents contemporary art by internationally renowned artists. This brings a contemporary perspective into the picture alongside historic technology. The Hufeisensiedlung, also known as the Großsiedlung Britz, offers a different historical perspective: built between 1925 and 1930 in Berlin’s Britz district, it is an outstanding example of classical modernism. The 1865 mill and the later housing architecture represent different eras; the gallery adds its own distinctive focus through contemporary art.

Regional History at the Neukölln Museum

The Neukölln Museum is housed in the converted horse and ox stable of the Britz estate and offers an interactive introduction to the district’s regional history. Original objects take centre stage in the permanent exhibition “99 × Neukölln.” The building and exhibits provide tangible points of connection to regional history. The museum thus complements the architectural perspective of the Hufeisensiedlung with an explicitly historical and interactive approach.

Parkland and a Ride Around Britzer Garten

Britzer Garten was originally created from scratch on previously agricultural land for the 1985 Federal Horticultural Show and covers 90 hectares. At its centre is a lake of almost 10 hectares, surrounded by hills, flower groves, meadows and gardens; there are also four themed gardens. The central lake and surrounding landscapes offer a different experience from the historic buildings and exhibitions.

A historic park railway runs on a 600-millimetre narrow-gauge track and stops at five stations in the park. A complete circuit takes one hour. This duration provides a clear reference point for planning your day; the ride is also a timed activity within the expansive garden.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Berlin-Neukölln, use your preferred focus as a guide: would you like the parkland and its one-hour railway ride to be the main feature, or are you especially interested in milling technology, architectural history and regional exhibitions? These are distinct itinerary options supported by the places described.
