Adlershof combines an unusual history of technology with art, literature and a protected landscape. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment here can plan their trip entirely according to their own interests: Johannisthal Landscape Park offers walking paths and nature experiences, while the Trudelturm, wind tunnels, museums and exhibitions provide insights into science, aviation and culture.

Aviation History and Technical Monuments

The history of aviation is present at several specific locations in Adlershof. Germany’s first powered-aircraft airfield opened on the Johannisthal-Adlershof site in 1909. Two years later, Germany’s first aviation school was established in Adlershof. These historical milestones make the development of the site understandable without requiring you to limit yourself to a single attraction.

One of the distinctive structures is the spin wind tunnel, also known as the Trudelturm. It is a listed technical monument. For many years, the spin wind tunnel provided the only way to simulate the dangerous flight condition of spinning in a laboratory. The Large Wind Tunnel, by contrast, was used for aerodynamic studies in airflows and for optimizing aircraft shapes and surfaces. You can look inside the Trudelturm as part of guided tours and events such as the Long Night of the Sciences.

Johannisthal Landscape Park: Paths Between Greenery and the Former Airfield

For a trip focused on activity and nature, the 68-hectare Johannisthal Landscape Park offers a focus of its own. The site was formerly called Adlershof Landscape Park and is now a public green and recreational area with walking paths, a runway, a dirt-bike track, a beach volleyball court, a playing field and a floral mosaic. At its center is the 26-hectare former airfield area, which is protected as a nature reserve.

A circular path runs along the edges of the protected core area. A partially raised footbridge and wire-mesh blocks filled with fieldstones make the unusable area, characterized by valuable biotopes, visually accessible. A flock of sheep maintains the nature reserve in an environmentally compatible way. This allows time outdoors to be organized differently from a classic museum visit: You can combine walking paths, open spaces and the unique history of the former airfield.

Art, Literature and Independent Discoveries

The Anna Seghers Museum is located in Anna Seghers’s original, preserved apartment on Anna-Seghers-Straße. Visitors can explore the writer’s faithfully preserved living and working environment there. This provides families and travelers interested in culture with an illustrative introduction to literature tied to a specific place.

The Alte Schule Adlershof cultural center is the municipal center for contemporary art in the Treptow-Köpenick district. Every floor is accessible without barriers. Around seven exhibitions from various artistic genres are presented there each year, including painting, graphic art, photography, sculpture, video art and applied art. The Gedankengang educational trail complements these offerings with a digital walk: You can explore the technology park independently from Adlershof S-Bahn station.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Trip Plans?

When looking for a holiday apartment in Adlershof, it is worth deciding on your preferred daily rhythm first. If nature and walking are the main priorities, the landscape park provides an important point of orientation. For culture-focused days, the Anna Seghers Museum and the exhibitions at the Alte Schule are additional options. Those particularly interested in aviation and research can focus on the Trudelturm, wind tunnels and the history of the powered-aircraft airfield. This way, you are choosing not only accommodation but also a type of trip that suits your interests.
