Dammbach: Hiking, Culture and Experiences

The Dammbach Valley is home to oak and beech forests that provide welcome coolness even on hot summer days. A well-maintained, signposted network of hiking trails leads through the extensive forests. There are also routes that combine landscapes, history and different distances—from two 9 km loops to a stage of around 20 km.

Hiking Trails with a Story

The European Cultural Trail “Between Scharstein and Geishöhe” explores the cultural landscape of Dammbach between Scharstein in the north and Geishöhe in the south of the Dammbach Valley. Starting at Sternplatz, the trail can be walked as two loops, each 9 km long. The northern loop leads to Pollershöhe and Scharstein. At Pollershöhe, dry-stone walls made from fieldstones and stone platforms bear witness to earlier farming and viticulture. Scharstein is a wayside shrine dating from 1586 that commemorates a jealous love affair.

Another option is the 3.5 km “Alte Schulweg” adventure and Passion trail, which climbs uphill to Geishöhe. The third stage of the Spessartweg 2 also runs from Dammbach to Geishöhe via the scenic “Alte Schulweg”; it is around 20 km long. These are two different routes: the shorter adventure trail and a longer stage of the long-distance hiking trail.

Geishöhe is a mountain 521 m high. The Ludwig Keller Tower stands at its highest point in Oberwintersbach, a district of the municipality of Dammbach. Four popular hiking trails meet at the tower. Forest Views and Experiences for Different Interests

The accessible “Nähe und Weite” circular trail is located at Oberschnorrhof. This gives it a different focus from the routes to Geishöhe: here, forest views and the history of settlement and land use take centre stage.

The multi-generational playground, climbing castle and bike trail in Taubendelle form a meeting place for all generations. Visitors of all ages can practise their cycling skills on the bike trail. Nearby, the cycle path to Neuhammer also provides a starting point for cycling and mountain biking tours in the area around Dammbach.

Church and Traditions

The listed parish church of St. Valentine is in the district of Wintersbach. Passion plays are held in Dammbach every five years, with more than 200 performers portraying the Christian drama of the suffering and death of Jesus of Nazareth. This recurring performance is a distinctive cultural highlight alongside the traces of history you can encounter on the cultural trail.

Every two years, the “Dammbachklänge” music association organises the Güldner gathering, which attracts numerous visitors, including from beyond the state border. Another religious tradition is the annual summer pilgrimage on foot from Krausenbach to Walldürn.
