Discover Heufeld
Accommodation in Heufeld
Heufeld can be discovered through two distinctive themes: sacred art associated with St. Korbinian and cycling routes that reach the Mangfall at Heufeld. There is also the Kuchlmeier Chapel, where a traditional May devotion is held. When choosing a holiday apartment, a good starting point is to consider what you want to focus on during your trip: should it be devoted mainly to church art and local history, or would you like to see Heufeld as a stage of a cycling tour? The places and routes mentioned offer different perspectives for doing so.
St. Korbinian: Building history and sacred art
The parish church of St. Korbinian was built in 1953–54 and consecrated on 12 September 1954. The free-standing bell tower has three bells. The church was designed by Josef Wiedemann in a simple architectural style. Its construction period, consecration and design give the place a clear historical context; the separate bell tower is a distinctive feature of the church.
The interior contains works by Heufeld sculptor Matthäus Bayer: the wooden altar cross with a figure of Christ, the baptistery, the tabernacle and a figure of St. Korbinian. The simple design and the specifically named sacred works offer different points of interest. For travellers interested in building history and church art, St. Korbinian therefore offers several aspects to explore together.
Kuchlmeier Chapel and May devotion
The Kuchlmeier Chapel also has a clearly dated history: Pastor Walter Wenninger solemnly inaugurated it on 19 September 1999. On the last Friday in May, the d´Mangfalltaler Heufeld e.V. traditional costume association traditionally holds a May devotion there. The two dates represent different time frames: the inauguration was a historical event, while the devotion is part of a recurring May tradition. If attending the May devotion is important to your stay, check the exact date in advance.
Cycling through Heufeld
The 31-kilometre stage of the Sempt-Mangfall Cycle Route runs from Grafing via Bruck and Schönau to Heufeld. Near Heufeld, the cycle route reaches the Mangfall and connects with the Mangfall Cycle Route. So this is not just about a single destination, but also about a route with named places and a connection to a second cycle route.
A companion booklet also presents the “Cycle Tour to the Heufeld Field and Wayside Crosses”. The booklet and route documentation are available on the parish website. This cycle tour has a different focus from the 31-kilometre stage: it centres on Heufeld’s field and wayside crosses. For planning, you can therefore choose between a longer cycle-route stage and a tour focused on a specific local theme.
In the wider destination of Bruckmühl
The wider destination of Bruckmühl offers other options that you can consider independently of the Heufeld themes. The circular hike “Hiking in the Footsteps of the Holnstainer Knights” is about 7 km long, takes approximately 2.5 hours and starts and ends at Bruckmühl railway station. By contrast, the Via Julia cycle route from Günzburg to Salzburg runs through Bruckmühl. These details make it possible to compare a circular hike with an approximate duration and distance with a cycle route whose endpoints are named.
The Mangfall Valley Railway also offers four boarding points in Bruckmühl: the Bruckmühl and Heufeld railway stations and the Heufeldmühle and Hinrichssegen stops. If you plan to include the railway in your trip, check the timetable in advance.
