The Moated Castle and Its History

The present-day New Castle of Rügland was built to plans by Karl Friedrich von Zocha. Construction began in early April 1714 and was completed by the end of 1717. These dates mark the castle’s history precisely, from the start of construction to its completion. Guided tours of the castle are available by prior arrangement; reconfirm the arrangements before your trip.

The rooms on the first floor of the moated castle, with their valuable furnishings, are preserved as a so-called family museum and are occasionally used for events. The historic building is thus connected not only with the period in which it was built, but also with its preserved furnishings and occasional use for events. When planning your trip, a guided tour by prior arrangement is a separate item to organise well in advance.

The Painted Church and the Glass Stele

Dedicated to Saint Margaret, the church was consecrated in 1754. It reflects the architectural style of Protestant church buildings in the Margraviate of Ansbach at the time. Because its gallery-fronts are extensively painted, it is also known as the Painted Church. The name refers to a specific feature of the interior and makes the church a distinct part of Rügland’s architectural and artistic history.

The Glass Stele stands on Ansbacher Straße, between the church and the moated castle, in a small area marked out with paving. This four-winged structure displays historical views of Rügland from around the turn of the 20th century between its glass panels. The photographs offer a direct comparison between past and present. While the church’s painted gallery-fronts draw attention to the design of a historic building, the stele sets old views alongside present-day impressions. More Historical Traces and the NorA Circular Cycle Route

The Turkish Cross in Rügland’s cemetery, with its inscription, commemorates Carl Osman: he was born in Constantinople in 1655, taken prisoner near Belgrade in 1688, and baptised in Rügland in 1727. The three events in the inscription connect different places and years with Rügland’s history. The village of Rosenberg, within the municipality, is also home to a draw well thought to date from the 18th century. Its rectangular basin, timber framework with a well wheel and tiled roof provide another historic trace shaped by craftsmanship.

It is 56 kilometres long and passes through Oberdachstetten, Flachslanden, Rügland, Weihenzell and Lehrberg. Its length and the places along the way give the route a clearly defined regional scope; a guided castle tour by prior arrangement, by contrast, is a separate visit to organise. These offer two possible focuses for your stay: an arranged tour exploring the castle’s history and furnishings, or a longer circular ride through several villages.
