Wildsteig: Hiking, Culture and Alpine Foothill Views

Wildsteig lies in a hilly Alpine foothill landscape at the watershed between the Ammer and Lech rivers. From here, there are views of the Ammergau Alps, the Allgäu, the Blue Land and the Lech Plain. Hiking trails, cycling routes, cross-country ski trails and cultural sites offer different ways to shape your stay. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects of the village matter most for your trip.

Hiking routes of varying lengths
The W2 circular trail to the Mühlegg viewpoint starts at the car park opposite the bakery in Wildsteig. It leads through the Illach Gorge and is about 8.5 kilometres long; the walking time is approximately 2.5 hours. The longer W4 loop starts at the car park by the community hall, passes the Wieskirche and returns to Wildsteig. It is 11.5 kilometres long and takes about three hours. Comparing distance and walking time, W2 is the shorter of the two routes described.
The Wildsteig Nordic Walking Centre also offers several distances: 4.9, 8.5, 10.5 and 14.5 kilometres. This gives you additional distances to choose from besides the two circular trails. The King Ludwig Way, the Munich Way of St James and the Meditation Trail also pass through Wildsteig. These names offer different starting points for planning your walks; no specific distances are given here for these three routes.
Cycling and winter trails
Two named cycling routes pass through Wildsteig: the Lake Constance–Lake Königssee Cycle Route and the Ammer-Amper Cycle Route. At the Pilgerhaus at Kirchbergstraße 25, there is a bicycle repair station with a pump, hanging brackets and various tools for minor repairs. Cyclists will find a convenient place there for simple repair work.
In winter, the network of cross-country ski trails covers about 22 kilometres and offers both classic and skating tracks. As the trails are groomed by volunteers, they are not always all groomed. One clearly defined option is Trail 2: it forms a five-kilometre loop between Schwaig and Unterhäusern and is also suitable for beginners.
Culture and local history
The Lourdes Grotto in Wildsteig is considered the largest grotto complex in southern Germany. It underwent extensive renovation from 2019 to 2022. The parish church was given new furnishings and an elegant tower under Provost Ambrosius; the work was completed in 1785. The grotto complex and the parish church offer insight into the village’s history.
The Pilgerhaus Wildsteig is a former municipal building, renovated as a listed monument, and is run as a pilgrims’ hostel. If you are interested in the village’s history and architecture, you can include it in your travel plans alongside the parish church and the Lourdes Grotto.
More ways to spend your stay
At Schwaigsee near Morgenbach in Wildsteig, you’ll find sunbathing lawns, a car park, changing rooms, a kiosk and sanitary facilities. There is also a specific horse-riding option for families with children: riding lessons for children can be booked with Frau Gindhart at the Hauserwirt, Hausen 4. The two options are quite different: one offers facilities by the lake, while the other focuses on riding lessons for children.
