Schwaig: Church, Festivals and Stock Sport
Accommodation in Schwaig
The parish church of St. Korbinian, recurring village events and club activities give Schwaig several specific points of interest. These activities follow different schedules: stock sport training takes place weekly, some festivals return every year, and the maypole is erected every four years. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the building’s history, a particular festival date or a regular sporting activity should shape your stay.
The Parish Church of St. Korbinian
The parish church of St. Korbinian is the only church in the district dedicated to the patron saint of the Diocese of Munich, St. Korbinian. The present church was built to plans by Munich architect Johann Schott. Construction began on 15 April 1903, and the church was consecrated on 25 June 1905. Architecturally, the building belongs to the late Neo-Romanesque period.
One notable detail in the building’s history is the old chapel, which was incorporated into the church as a sacristy. As a result, the church does not face east. The construction date and consecration mark two different milestones; the connection to the former chapel also explains an unusual feature of the church’s orientation. Its character is shaped not only by its architectural style, but also by its origins and alterations.
Festivals Throughout the Year
A maypole is erected in Schwaig every four years. All the village’s clubs take part in the ceremony. Christmas Eve has a very different place in the annual calendar: after the church’s Christmas Eve service, mulled wine is served every year in the village square. These events differ considerably for travel planning: the maypole follows a multi-year cycle, while the mulled wine gathering takes place on the same evening every year.
Since it was first held in 1979, the Bürgerfest has taken place every year on the third weekend in June. For the past few years, it has lasted two days, Saturday and Sunday. It is open to all residents of the village and visitors from the municipality, and anyone can attend. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, use the June weekend as a guide and check the exact date before making plans.
Club Life and Summer Tournament
Stock sport training organised by FC Sportfreunde 1913 Schwaig e.V. takes place every Tuesday from 7 pm in the Schwaig stock sport hall. Anyone interested can try the sport there; training sticks are provided. Unlike the festivals in the annual calendar, this training offers a regular weekly session. If you would like to take part, check the latest schedule in advance.
The Midnight Ball, organised by FC Sportfreunde 1913 Schwaig e.V., is a traditional summer tournament for BBQ teams. It takes place on the Saturday before the last day of school before the Bavarian summer holidays. Its timing differs from that of the Bürgerfest: the third weekend in June is the key date for the Bürgerfest, while the Midnight Ball is held on the Saturday before the last day of school. These are two different calendar markers to consider when choosing your travel dates.
