Schwabhausen brings together traces of Celtic settlement with opportunities for exercise and nature watching. The S2 S-Bahn line is also useful for getting your bearings: it runs between Altomünster and Dachau, serving Schwabhausen and the district of Arnbach. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether local history, sports facilities or seasonal nature experiences matter most to you.

Local history between church and inn

St. Michael is Schwabhausen’s parish church. The remains of a Celtic earthwork lie northwest of the church, providing evidence of Celtic settlement. This settlement activity is dated approximately to the period from 500 to 15 BC.

The present-day “Zur Post” inn is also associated with a historical event: a memorial plaque there commemorates the official farewell to Pope Pius VI in Schwabhausen. The “Obern Tafern,” now the Gasthof zur Post, was formerly the village’s main stopping place for travelers. The church, Celtic earthwork and memorial plaque offer different points of interest; they give you specific ways to discover Schwabhausen’s history, not just use it as a base for activities.

Sports facilities and a chessboard in the town center

The sports complex at Jahnstraße 5 includes the “Heinrich-Loder-Halle” sports hall, a beach volleyball court, facilities for bowls and bocce, a soccer five-a-side pitch and a pump track. The facilities cater to a range of interests, from indoor sports to ball games, skill-based sports and cycling. If you want to include exercise in your days away, you can take this variety into account when choosing where to stay.

For a game of chess, head to the area between the town hall and market square, where a life-size chessboard was installed in 2018. It can be used free of charge, with no advance registration; you can get the code for the pieces from the municipal administration. This gives you a specific stop for a game without requiring you to book an organized activity. A field path also leads to Schwabhausen’s Blumenviertel and ends at Kornblumenstraße, a clearly named landmark in the village.

Seasonal nature in Schwabhausen

Lapwings return to the municipality of Schwabhausen every year from February onward. The males court females with conspicuous display flights and loud “Kie-witt!” calls. Please stay on the paths during the breeding season and avoid disturbing the birds. Watching them is a nature experience that calls for consideration of the animals as part of your plans.

Another seasonal highlight can be found in the green corridor between Mohnblumenstraße and Blumenstraße, where a wildflower meadow is planted. A total of 240 flower bulbs were planted; in spring, daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops appear. Lapwing watching from February onward and spring flowers offer different seasonal highlights. When choosing when to travel, you can consider these nature experiences alongside the local attractions and sports facilities available year-round.

More destinations in the wider Dachau destination

The wider Dachau destination also has distinct day-trip options. The Karlsfelder See recreation area lies directly next to the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld, covers 58.2 hectares and is located in the district of Dachau. The lake is used year-round for walks, jogging, cycling and relaxation—a different focus from Schwabhausen’s sports facilities and nature watching.

A cultural contrast elsewhere in the wider Dachau destination is Petersberg near Erdweg. It is home to a Romanesque basilica built in 1104 that has been preserved to this day. A 200-meter-long sculpture trail with ten artworks at eight stations also runs through Petersberg Forest. Such destinations can broaden your choice of holiday themes without conflating them with the attractions in Schwabhausen.
