Discover Wildenberg: Church, castle and cycle path
Accommodation in Wildenberg
Explore Wildenberg through its local attractions and a shared walking, cycling and agricultural access path along the B299. St. Andreas Parish Church is in Pürkwang; the municipality also lists Wildenberg Castle as a landmark and attraction. This places architecture and routes side by side as different starting points for planning your trip.

Church and attractions in the municipality
The late Gothic parish church of St. Andreas in Pürkwang stands out for its red-brick construction and its 46-metre-high tower, visible from afar. If you are interested in architectural styles and distinctive church towers, this is a specific destination within the municipality of Wildenberg. Wildenberg Castle adds to the municipality’s attractions: the municipality counts it among its landmarks. Both places provide a reason to plan your stay not only around outdoor activities but also around an interest in buildings and local history.
A route along the B299
A shared walking, cycling and agricultural access path runs along the B299 federal highway through the municipalities of Wildenberg and Siegenburg. The second construction phase was officially opened on 14 August 2026. The walking and cycling path is part of the Kelheim district cycle network. This provides a regional cycling connection alongside the local attractions; the route is also designated for walking and agricultural access. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether the local attractions or exploring cycling and walking routes will shape your stay more.
Planning your trip
The municipality of Wildenberg also has a municipal playground for children. Together, the church, castle and route offer different themes to consider when planning. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wildenberg, you can first decide whether you mainly want to explore the local attractions or also include experiences across the wider Kelheim destination.
The wider Kelheim destination
The wider Kelheim destination combines nature with culture and longer excursions. The northern part of Kelheim district, including Kelheim, Essing and Riedenburg, lies within the Altmühltal Nature Park. The “Weltenburger Enge, Hirschberg and Altmühlleiten” nature reserve, located in Kelheim, includes the Danube Gorge. There are eleven hiking trails in the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve. One specifically described tour covers 13 kilometres from Essing, via the Tatzlwurm, past the Klausen Caves and along the Celtic Wall to the Danube Gorge. These different details can help you decide whether a choice of hiking trails or a particular, longer route is more appealing for your plans.
Cycling and cultural attractions can also be combined in the Kelheim destination without confusing them with Wildenberg’s own attractions. The Danube Cycle Path passes through Weltenburg and Kelheim; in Kelheim, the old town and the Befreiungshalle lie along the route. Check the route information before setting off. The Befreiungshalle, commissioned by King Ludwig I, is a memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815. One stage of the East Bavarian Way of St. James leads from Kelheim to the Weltenburger Enge.
For further cultural interests, the Altmühltal Archaeology Park offers a setting of its own: it extends for 39 kilometres, and most of its sites are located directly on the Altmühltal Cycle Path. It comprises 18 sites in total between Kelheim, Essing, Riedenburg and Dietfurt, offering insights from the Neanderthals to the Celts. Prunn Castle is known as the place where an original manuscript of the Nibelungenlied was found. In the southern part of Kelheim district, Abensberg, Neustadt an der Donau, Biburg, Rohr i. NB and Mainburg are part of the Hallertau, considered the world’s largest contiguous hop-growing region. The wider Kelheim destination therefore offers a choice of different interests: nature and hiking, cycling routes, archaeological sites or cultural history.
