Ellzee: Trails by the Günz Reservoir and Village History
Accommodation in Ellzee
From Ellzee town hall, gravel farm tracks lead into the Günz floodplain; in the district of Stoffenried, the local history museum and village pond reveal another side of the municipality. Enjoy a stay combining walks, cycling tours and insights into regional craft traditions.
Hiking Trails between the Günz Floodplain and Günz Reservoir
The Günz Reservoir premium hiking trail follows gravel farm tracks from Ellzee town hall into the Günz floodplain. Its trail certification is valid until October 2028. Another trail runs north from Ellzee community centre to Waldstetten and offers views of the Günz Reservoir and the surrounding countryside.
A walking trail along the Günz embankment passes through the Taubried wetlands to the west and by the fish ladder at the hydroelectric power station. This gives you different landscapes to focus on during your walks: the Günz floodplain, views of the reservoir or the path through Taubried. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Cycling and Traditional Crafts in Stoffenried
The Günz Valley Cycle Route is around 92 kilometres long. It starts in Günzach in the eastern Allgäu, passes Ellzee and ends where the Günz flows into the Danube in Günzburg. The continuous cycle path along the B16 provides access to Krumbach to the south and Günzburg to the north. Cycling trips are also possible in Stoffenried Forest. There is a choice of routes ranging from forest rides to a longer river route. Check current trail conditions before your tour.
The Sölde at the Stoffenried Local History Museum is a former smallholding dating from around 1880. It features furnished parlours and bedrooms, a stable and a barn with agricultural tools, bringing the historic farm’s living and working environment to life.
You can discover more traditional crafts in the former Pfründhäusel, built in 1798. It houses a small shoemaker’s workshop and a tiny rope-making workshop; in the parlour, you can follow the process of making seagrass shoes. In 1991, the ropewalk from Langenhaslach was installed in the garden of the local history museum.
On activity days, children and adults can discover regional traditions at the local history museum and try activities including brewing beer, baking bread, spinning wool and twisting rope.
Village Pond and Local History
The village pond, measuring about 120 × 100 metres, lies in the centre of Stoffenried; you can take a short walk around it. The traditional pond festival takes place every year at the end of July in the pond area of Stoffenried. The exact date may vary from year to year.
Ellzee’s history is also tied to a specific place: a 200-year-old chapel once stood on the site of today’s church.
Getting There and Choosing a Holiday Focus
Ellzee has a stop on the Mittelschwaben Railway between Mindelheim, Krumbach and Günzburg. It is close to the starting point of the Günz Reservoir premium hiking trail at the town hall. Check current timetables before travelling.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can use your preferred daily activities as a guide: Ellzee’s trails and cycling options offer a different focus from the local history museum, the pond and the activity days in Stoffenried. This can help you decide whether outdoor pursuits or village history and traditional crafts should make up a larger part of your stay.
