Haldenwang: Castle Architecture and the Place Name “Halde”
Accommodation in Haldenwang
Haldenwang can be explored through its architectural history and a small trace of local naming tradition. The castle of the Barons of Freyberg is a prominent historical landmark: its main structure dates in essence to the 15th or 16th century and was remodeled in the Neo-Gothic style by Georg von Stengel in 1859. To the southeast of the town, the Herrgottsruh Chapel on Roßhaupter Weg adds a glimpse of older sacred architecture. The castle, chapel and place name “Halde” offer different starting points for exploring local and architectural history.

The Castle of the Barons of Freyberg
The castle is a complex of interconnected structures. East of the main building are a two-story library wing and a chapel wing; to the west is another two-story side wing. A gate wall with small towers completes the complex. Several clearly identifiable structures come together here, while the history of the main building can be traced through two dates: its core, which dates to the 15th or 16th century, and its Neo-Gothic remodeling in 1859. The contrast between the older core and its later transformation gives the castle’s architecture a distinctive focus.
The Herrgottsruh Chapel Nearby
The Herrgottsruh Chapel is located southeast of Haldenwang on Roßhaupter Weg. The chapel dates from after 1613 and is an open, one-and-a-half-aisle, three-bay loggia with a hipped roof. It is recorded as having been repaired in 1733 and also contains furnishings. Compared with the castle’s multi-winged layout, the focus here is on the loggia and hipped roof. These distinct architectural forms create two separate focal points in the architectural history of the town and its immediate surroundings.
Another trace of local tradition is the place name “Halde,” which has been preserved in Haldenwang. It adds a linguistic trace of local history to the castle’s major structures.
Culture and Family Activities in the Günzburg Travel Destination
The wider Günzburg travel destination offers more cultural attractions. Maria Vesperbild near Ziemetshausen is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia; each year, 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims visit the miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows. A Stations of the Cross trail leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in the nearby forest. The grotto was built in 1957 and restored in 2011; it contains more than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimonies to the help received from the Mother of God.
Museums in the Günzburg travel destination offer another perspective on history: the Bavarian School Museum in Ichenhausen presents the development of education over thousands of years. Among its special features is a historic classroom that once accommodated around 50 children. The Burgau City Museum presents the town’s history, from the Middle Ages to the recent past, across two floors and more than 700 square meters. Religious tradition, educational history and local history thus stand alongside one another as distinct cultural themes.
LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg is another distinct outing for families: the theme park has 11 themed areas and 68 attractions. The park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. If you plan to visit, check the latest operating information for your preferred date.

The trails in the Günzburg travel destination also vary considerably in length. The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometers between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge, by contrast, is an 18.5-kilometer loop between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. For a shorter outing, try the Hansenhohl nature trail, which is around 1.5 kilometers long and has eight play and information stations. Winter visits are not recommended because of the risk of slipping. A free quiz app, “Sabotage im Hansenhohl,” is also available for the trail; check in advance whether the app is available. This lets you choose between a long-distance hike, a loop and a shorter themed trail without treating trail lengths as walking times.
