Wine trails and Franconian traditions
More than 30 routes in Franconian Wine Country carry the “Wege zum Wein” quality seal. These certified trails are consistently and reliably signposted and are generally circular routes. This means that when planning, you can first consider the type of tour without having to commit to a particular route or pace. The suggested cycling tours also offer different time frames, ranging from activities lasting three hours to several days.
Wine is part of the regional culture here, not just the trails. Silvaner is the signature grape variety of Franconian Wine Country. The Bocksbeutel has been a hallmark of Franconian wine for centuries and is now protected under EU law. At certain times of year, winemakers open their courtyards as seasonal wine taverns, known as Heckenwirtschaften. If you are interested in this tradition, you can also consider the wine festivals, wine tastings and Christmas markets in the annual events calendar as possible reasons to visit.
The tour through Franconian Wine Country between Schweinfurt and Karlstadt takes in wineries and wine shops. This offers another way to explore wine towns and wine products in addition to the signposted wine trails. Culture in Würzburg, Volkach and Schweinfurt
In Würzburg, the Residence is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museum für Franken at Marienberg Fortress houses the largest collection of Tilman Riemenschneider’s masterpieces. Art and history are also central to other places in the region. In Volkach, the Church of Maria im Weingarten displays Tilman Riemenschneider’s Madonna in the Rosary. In Schweinfurt, the Georg Schäfer Museum houses the most important private collection of 19th-century German painting; the Kunsthalle Schweinfurt shows contemporary art from 1945 onwards. The German Carnival Museum in Kitzingen is the official museum of the Federation of German Carnival. This selection offers a variety of cultural focuses, from painting and sculpture to carnival.
Experience the Main and the landscape
Along the Main in Franconian Wine Country, designated canoe and kayak launch and landing points are available. Along the waterway, “Yellow Wave” signs point out these spots as well as campsites and rest areas, restaurants, shops, places of interest and railway stations. If you would like to combine your trip with time on the water, you can take these signposted locations into account when choosing which places to visit.
A special view can be enjoyed from the platform at “terroir f” on Stettener Stein: in 2020, the German Wine Institute named it the “most beautiful wine view in Franconia”.
