Wiesenthau is located near the Wiesent River in the Forchheim district of Upper Franconia. The village stands on a slight elevation; the Ehrenbürg, also known as the Walberla, forms a distinctive backdrop to the settlement.

Culture

The townscape is dominated by a Renaissance building associated with the Edle von und zu Wiesenthau family. A church adjoins it, which formerly served as a castle chapel. The surrounding area of Wiesenthau is home to Hagenbach Castle, the Upper Franconia Archaeology Museum, Hundshaupten Castle and Ermreuth Castle.

Wiesenthau was first mentioned in documents in 1062; the Lords of Wiesenthau exercised local rule from 1128 to 1814. The village also has a bakery with wall paintings. Wiesenthau Castle currently serves as a hotel and restaurant.
