Selb-Plößberg: St. Joseph, hiking trail and cycling routes
Accommodation in Selb-Plößberg
Selb-Plößberg combines a precisely dated church history with routes to explore on foot and by bike. In the wider destination of Selb, porcelain culture adds another dimension: there, the experience ranges from trying things out for yourself to preserved evidence of industrial history. This lets you choose between local routes and a closer exploration of porcelain.
St. Joseph’s Church and its history
The foundation stone for the branch church of St. Joseph in Selb-Plößberg was laid on October 10, 1964; it was consecrated on June 27, 1965. These two dates provide a precise point of reference for the history of the town. For travelers who want to include culture and history in their tour, the church is a tangible historical landmark in the area.
On foot and by bike
At 9.00 km long, the Selb-Plößberg RW 1 circular hiking trail is one of the available hiking options. Another option by bike is the tour to the Kornberg-Vorsuchhütte, which passes through Selb-Plößberg. Check the conditions before setting off, as route details may change. Christoph-Krautheim-Straße connects Selb and Selb-Plößberg and was equipped with modern cycling infrastructure in 2023.
At Selb-Plößberg station, the Perlenroute route meets the local line; the station is opposite the Porzellanikon. The Perlenroute is an intermunicipal cycling project that is intended to create closer links across the German-Czech border region in the future. This distinction is useful when planning: alongside the local hiking option and a cycling tour through Selb-Plößberg, there is also a project looking ahead to the future.
Experience porcelain in the wider Selb area
The Porzellanikon in Selb takes visitors on a journey through 300 years of porcelain production. At hands-on stations in the “Porcelain Production” exhibition, visitors can try things out for themselves and learn. Check the current exhibition program before your trip.
In Selb, the wider destination, the Porzellanikon Selb is housed in a former Rosenthal factory that closed in 1969. Today, around 9,000 m² of the repurposed industrial site accommodates three museums: the European Industrial Museum for Porcelain, the Rosenthal Museum and the European Museum of Technical Ceramics. Across more than 8,000 m², the Porzellanikon Selb showcases historic machinery, interactive stations, Rosenthal tableware, technical ceramics and a steam engine. Of the ten once-mighty round kilns, six are still fully preserved and can be entered. Here, the history of porcelain production meets the wide range of its products.
Cultural events in Selb
Since 1977, the International Borderland Film Days have been held each year during the week after Easter at SPEKTRUM Selb. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition. The Rosenthal Theater also offers its own cultural focus: it is located in the heart of Selb on the slope of the Selbbach valley. Its program includes opera, operetta, musicals, plays, symphony concerts, chamber concerts, jazz concerts and cabaret. For individual performances, it is worth checking the current program.
The Rosenthal Theater also hosts an annual presentation of the local porcelain industry under the theme “Weeks of White Gold.” When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to keep the two areas distinct: in Selb-Plößberg, the focus is on the church and the routes; the Porzellanikon and the cultural offerings mentioned above are in the wider Selb area. Base your choice of location on the destinations you actually plan to visit.
