Comparing the routes can help you choose a hike: returning to the starting point is part of the route described for L11, while L1 stands out for its figure-eight shape and course through different landscape areas.

On a hike on 25 August 2024, the route passed Mucklbrunnen, the Weihersmühle monument, the Görsdorfer Wall and heath, and Rottenbach Moor. This is a snapshot of a hike at a particular time that linked several named sites in Lautertal. In addition, hiking trails in the municipality were newly signposted in 2024 as part of a funded project.

To reach the L11 circular route, you can travel from Coburg on city bus route 2 or from Rottenbach on regional bus route 8318; the destination stop is called “Oberlauter Wendeplatz”. Check the timetable before setting out, as routes may change. Cycling is another option: a cycle path from Oberlauter to Tiefenlauter was inaugurated in September 2026.

Tree, Stone, Chapel and Mill History

In Unterlauter, the Gerichtslinde (Court Lime Tree) is one of the oldest trees in the district of Coburg. The Kreuzstein (Cross Stone) stands right beside it and bears wheel and cross symbols. Their close proximity makes them a combined point of interest for anyone interested in local natural and cultural history.

In Tiefenlauter, the Franziskuskapelle (St. Francis Chapel) is located on the former route of the historic Werrabahn railway. The mills tell another part of the area’s history: Löhnersmühle, Massemühle and Welkersmühle shaped the economy of Lautertal’s villages for centuries. Winter Activities in Neukirchen

Neukirchen has two ski lifts run by WFC Coburg-Neukirchen: a button lift and a small learner lift. Whether the lifts are actually operating depends on conditions and schedules. Gletscheralpe serves drinks and food during the ski lifts’ opening hours, so its offerings are limited to those hours. If you are planning a winter visit, check in advance whether the lifts are operating and the opening hours apply to your dates.
