The origins of Veste Coburg date back to 1056. Several collection areas come together within the medieval fortress. Ehrenburg Palace served as the Coburg dukes’ town residence from 1547 to 1918. In the 19th century, under Duke Ernest I, it acquired its present-day Neo-Gothic façade, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. On Schlossplatz, arcades in the style of the late Italian Renaissance form a kind of boundary at the foot of the Hofgarten; they invite visitors to stroll and linger. Numerous concerts and festivals take place on Schlossplatz during the summer months.
Coburg’s market square was laid out in the late 13th century and paved by the 16th century. At its centre stands the monumental statue of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, erected in 1865. The weekly market takes place here on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Stalls offer fresh regional produce, flowers and handcrafted goods. You can also try a Coburg speciality in the market square: the bratwurst is traditionally grilled over a fire of pine cones and served fresh from the grill.

Coburg’s historic churches include St. Moriz and the Church of the Holy Cross. St. Moriz contains a Renaissance ducal tomb and an alabaster epitaph for Duke John Frederick the Middle.
