Obing is located in the Chiemgau Lake District, a pre-Alpine landscape shaped by glaciers. Gentle hills, numerous lakes, moors and forests give the area its character; the landscape is well suited to cycling, hiking and swimming. This provides a helpful guide when choosing a holiday apartment: consider whether you want your holiday days to focus mainly on outdoor activities, time by the water, or a mix of both.

Lake and Sculpture Trail

At Lake Obing, the theme of water takes on a tangible form: it is a swimming lake with a family-friendly lido. A long, gently sloping ramp gives wheelchair users direct access to the water. The lido and the ramp refer to different aspects of the lake—the swimming facilities and access to the water.

The Sculpture Trail also runs around Lake Obing. Since 1999, it has featured more than 20 works by contemporary sculptors, mostly from the southeast Bavarian region. As the works are on loan, the selection may change. The trail adds a cultural dimension alongside the swimming facilities: rather than water and the lido, the focus here is on works of contemporary sculpture.

Sacred Art and Local History

The high altar of St. Laurentius Parish Church houses three carved figures by the Master of Rabenden: the Madonna and Child, and Saints Lawrence and James the Elder. The altar thus brings together a figure of Mary and two saints. As an art theme, this ensemble is quite distinct from the Sculpture Trail: here, carved religious figures take centre stage, while there, the focus is on works by contemporary sculptors.

The Obing Local History Museum is housed in the former town hall. It displays artefacts relating to the history of Obing Castle, the history of schools and churches, and the LEO local railway. These subjects span the history of the castle, schools and churches, and the local railway. This offers a cultural perspective on several aspects of local history, rather than focusing on a single art form.

Routes and Seasonal Train Journeys

The Way of St. James passes through the region; Obing and Albertaich are located directly on the route. For travellers considering including the Way of St. James in their plans, these two places are specific reference points along the way.

The 2026 seasonal timetable lists Sunday services on the Chiemgau Local Railway from Obing to Bad Endorf via Amerang and Halfing, running between May and September. As seasonal timetables can change, check the information when planning a future trip.

The Wider Region: Traunstein

The wider travel destination of Traunstein provides a broader regional context through the Traunstein district. The district is home to Lake Chiemsee and Lake Waginger; the Chiemgau Alps have more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks reaching up to 2,000 metres in elevation. The Seeoner Lakes are listed as a nature reserve in the district, while the Waginger and Tachinger See area is designated as a landscape conservation area. These examples broaden the perspective on landscapes and protected areas in the district, without equating them with Obing’s specific features.
