Tretting: Trails, Chapels and Village Traditions
Accommodation in Tretting
Tretting is best discovered on foot along its trails, through its chapels and by attending its village events. The hiking routes follow different, specifically described courses; they are complemented by a cultural look at the chapels and both an annual spring event and a village Christmas celebration scheduled for December. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, these interests may help you decide whether Tretting is right for your planned stay.
Hiking trails with different routes
The As01 hiking trail, also known as the Sebastiansweg, passes through Tretting and continues toward Kalkofen. In Trettinger Birkenberg, it shares a short stretch of a few metres with the Goldsteig. This brief shared section is a specific point of reference for anyone wishing to locate the route in Birkenberg.
The Kalkofen Circular Trail As03 follows a different sequence: from the village of Tretting, it leads along a farm track to Kalkofen, past a lime quarry and through Hochholz to Tretting Chapel. The circular trail reaches Tretting via Birkenberg. In comparison, the As01 focuses on the direction toward Kalkofen and its short shared stretch with the Goldsteig; the As03 names Kalkofen, Hochholz and the chapel as successive points along the route. This lets you distinguish between the two trails based on their described courses.
Chapels and imagery
Many hiking trails lead to the Arnschwanger Forest Chapel, also known as Tretting Chapel. The Kalkofen Circular Trail As03 also leads to Tretting Chapel. Its name therefore provides another point of reference when you include this destination in your hiking plans.
The Tretting village chapel has a glass gable wall featuring biblical motifs, with the Patrona Bavariae at its centre. The glass artwork was created in 2002. Anyone interested in religious imagery will find a clearly defined focus here: the motifs on the gable wall and the central depiction.
Events at different times of year
The Kirta in Tretting is celebrated every year on 1 May. Specific dates for the Tretting Village Christmas celebration have been set for December: the third edition was scheduled for 12 December 2025 at 5 pm at the Gasthaus Zur Linde; another is scheduled for 11 December 2026 at 5 pm at the same venue. The Kirta offers an annual spring event, while the dates given for the village Christmas celebration are specific December events. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, you can take these different dates into account.

The Arnschwang Wirtshöhe includes cellars from the 15th century. These offer two specific points of historical interest: the preserved building fabric of the water castle and the cellars of the Wirtshöhe.
