Zenting: Three Hiking Loops with Different Starting Points
Accommodation in Zenting
Three hiking loops give you concrete options for planning in Zenting: they differ in approximate length, starting and finishing points, and the option of a detour to the Kleiner Aschenstein viewpoint. You can choose a route based on whether the distance or a particular route is more important to you.
Hiking Loops by Length and Starting Point
The approximately 8.5 km Panorama Loop runs from Zenting via Daxstein and back to Zenting. At around 11 km, the Brotzeit Loop is longer; it starts and ends in Ranfels and passes through Zenting. The approximately 12 km Lindenweg starts and ends in Zenting. This loop offers the option of a detour to the Kleiner Aschenstein viewpoint.
The Panorama Loop is therefore the shortest of the three routes mentioned, while the Lindenweg is the longest. There is also a difference in the starting points: two loops start and end in Zenting, while the Brotzeit Loop starts and ends in Ranfels. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Zenting, these starting and finishing points can be one consideration when planning your routes. The Lindenweg also offers the option of a detour to the viewpoint.
The route distances are taken from the Sonnenwald hiking map, which appears to have been published in 2019. Check that you have the latest map before setting out on a hike.
Freyung-Grafenau: Natural and Cultural Sites in the Wider Destination
The wider destination of Freyung-Grafenau has further natural and cultural attractions. Bavarian Forest National Park extends into Freyung-Grafenau district and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. The 2024 zoning plan designates 75.37 percent of its area as natural zones.
In the Buchberger Leite wild gorge, steep rock ridges squeeze the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted bed. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the moss- and fern-rich gorge woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying booklet, runs through the Buchberger Leite between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.
The Schramlhaus in Freyung also brings together architectural and cultural history: built around 1700, it is now the oldest farmhouse in the town and, in its original state, one of the oldest in Freyung-Grafenau district. It houses more than a hundred original examples of reverse glass painting, a form of sacred folk art. The Wolfsteiner Local History Museum is also located in the Schramlhaus.
Near Neuschönau, the treetop walk and the animal enclosure are part of the Lusen National Park Centre. Visitors can learn about the national park and its native wildlife at the animal enclosure. The circular trails are also suitable for small children who are not yet able to cover long distances.
At the Gabreta Archaeological Adventure Park, buildings have been reconstructed based on original Celtic structures; they symbolise Celtic artefacts found on the hill of Paul Freund. Bread-making is one of the hands-on activities for visitors. Guided tours about Celtic life, led by knowledgeable guides, can also be booked. Details of the programme may change, so check them before visiting.
