Zeitlarn: By the Regen River, between history and storybook trails
Accommodation in Zeitlarn
Zeitlarn is a town on the Regen whose landscape stretches from the steep western riverbank to the settlement between the river and the hillside in the east. In addition to this river landscape, churches, historical traces, and storybook trails shape the character of the town. You can plan your stay around different interests, from local history and architecture to a longer outing with reading, exercise, and games.
Riverbank, river, and historic route
In the west, foothills of the Upper Palatinate Jura extend as a steep riverbank down to the Regen. The river lies 70 meters below. The name of the Regendorf district derives from this ridge. In the east of Zeitlarn, a road-oriented settlement lies between the Regen and a hillside on the foothills of the Falkenstein Forest.
The river and an old trade and transport route shaped the historical development of the two districts. The route led north from the nearby Free Imperial City of Regensburg. This connection provides an important context for local history: it is as much a part of Zeitlarn’s character as the contrasting landscapes in the west and east.
Churches, a memorial, and early settlement traces
Excavations in the municipality uncovered settlement traces from the Bronze Age, Hallstatt period, La Tène period, and Middle Ages. Regendorf’s history also reaches far back: from the 13th to the 15th century, the town was a manor of the Lords of Regeldorff. After 1505, Regendorf developed into a sought-after Hofmark (a noble estate with a degree of jurisdiction), with a castle and castle church, and remained part of Palatinate-Neuburg until 1808.
Zeitlarn has two churches with Neo-Romanesque architecture. The listed parish church of St. Bartholomew is a three-aisled basilica with a recessed choir and a flanking tower; Roth built it in 1898/99. The also-listed branch church of the Holy Trinity is a chancel-tower church with an apse, dating from 1907. To the south stands the war memorial for 1914/18: Max Roider created it in 1924 in the form of an Irish high cross made of shell limestone.
The former castle park is also part of the historic townscape. This English-style park features a former kitchen and fruit garden, terraces, steps, and fountains. Its history dates back to the 18th century and the period after 1840.
Storybook trails with time to read and play
The storybook trails are a project by the Zeitlarn library that introduces children to reading, exercise, and nature. The forest trails start in the districts of Zeitlarn, Laub, and Regendorf. Each trail has twelve panels featuring pages from picture books by Felix Neureuther, along with related movement exercises or nature games.
The individual trails are about 1.5 to 2 kilometers long. Allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes for walking time alone. With reading, exercise, and games, the outing takes about 1.5 hours. Keep this difference in mind when planning your day: if you want to enjoy the stops at a leisurely pace, allow for more than just the walking time. The Five Rivers Cycle Route also passes through Regendorf, a district of Zeitlarn.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether local history, the landscape, the storybook trails, or a combination of these will shape your stay. If you plan to visit the trails, organize your day around the longer outing, including stops for reading and games.
Additions in the wider Regensburg destination
In the wider Regensburg destination, the Walhalla provides a distinctive cultural and historical highlight. This Neoclassical memorial and hall of honor on the Danube is one of Germany’s notable buildings. Since 1842, distinguished Germans and individuals associated with German history have been honored there with marble busts and commemorative plaques; outside, the building is defined by a Doric design with 52 columns.
From the Stone Bridge in Regensburg to the foot of the Walhalla, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé run on the Danube from Easter through October. Check the schedule and specific operating days before your trip.
