Hiking in the Sonnenwald
Schöfweg has a well-signposted network of hiking trails and connects to the Goldsteig premium hiking trail. From Schöfweg, the Sonnenwald Adventure Trail links to the Goldsteig via access trail No. 35. This gives you both a local trail network and a direct connection to a long-distance hiking route.
The Turmweg Mitterdorf/Schöfweg–Brotjacklriegel is a manageable route: It is 2.5 kilometres long, rated easy, and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. The walking time is about 45 minutes. Its length, difficulty rating and approximate walking time give you a clear idea of what to expect if you are planning a shorter hike.
You can find more nature attractions in the village districts: Allhartsmais has a hedge nature trail, while Haunstein is home to a biotope. The options range from hiking on marked trails to visiting these special natural sites.
Winter sports in Langfurth
The ski area in the village district of Langfurth has seven lifts. Two are equipped with floodlighting and snowmaking facilities. The area also offers a children’s area, a ski school and a fun park for snowboarders. Facilities and services may change from season to season, so check the latest information before your visit.
There are 23 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in Schöfweg and the surrounding area. Whether they are usable depends on winter conditions. The Sonnenwald region also has trails for both classic cross-country skiing and skating. Cross-country skiing is therefore a distinct winter activity alongside the ski area in Langfurth, but it depends especially on the conditions each season.
A distinctive building in the town centre
The parish church of Mary, Mother of Sorrows is a striking granite building in the centre of Schöfweg. It adds a cultural note to the town and stands apart from the nature and sports attractions of its hiking trails and winter activities.
In the wider Freyung-Grafenau travel region
The wider Freyung-Grafenau travel region also offers distinctive natural attractions. Bavarian Forest National Park extends into Freyung-Grafenau district and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. According to the 2024 zoning map, 75.37 percent of its area belongs to the natural zones.
The Buchberger Leite wild stream gorge has a different kind of landscape: steep rock ridges confine the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe to a deep, narrow channel. Remnants of old-growth forest have survived in the gorge’s moss- and fern-rich woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail, with information boards and an accompanying brochure, leads through the gorge between Freyung and Ringelai. Historic timber-floating walls, tunnels cut into the rock and above-ground canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.
