The 7.4 km Schwabthal–Tiefenthal–Hohler Stein–End circular trail follows the Tiefenthal Gorge through wooded terrain with a stream, steep slopes, and rock formations. The route also crosses a Jurassic plateau and passes the striking Hohler Stein rock formation.

A shorter 3.9 km circular trail from Schwabthal climbs to the Weinhügel nature monument. There, juniper-covered meadows and rare and protected plants, including fringed gentian and silver thistle, characterize the route; it also offers views of the Lautergrund and Staffelberg.

Spitzberg and Staffelberg are also located near Schwabthal. Hohe Metze and Diebeshöhle are located in the surrounding area of Schwabthal.

Getting Around

The circular trail through the Tiefenthal Gorge begins in Schwabthal. There are parking spaces at the entrance to the village, and the route can also be reached by the Lautergrund bus line. On the way back, near the Lautergrund rehabilitation clinic, there is a Kneipp facility.

History and Culture

A challenging 14.8 km circular trail from Schwabthal via Uetzing, Staffelberg, and Stublang reaches the Staffelberg plateau. It passes archaeological remains of Celtic settlements and crosses fields where fossils of the prehistoric Jurassic Sea have been found.

Near Schwabthal are the Mellaberg section fortification, Pfarrfelsen castle site, and the Schwedenschanze. Langheim Abbey is located in the surrounding area of Schwabthal.
