Altenmünster can be explored through very different impressions: the historic village green in Baiershofen and the state forest northwest of Altenmünster, with its nature spots and hiking destinations. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to consider whether local history, church art or time in the forest will shape your stay. This way, holiday planning begins with specific interests rather than a general picture of the area.

Baiershofen: Village History and Baroque Art

Baiershofen is a district of Altenmünster. It was founded in the first half of the 14th century under the direction of Fultenbach Monastery as a settlement created by clearing woodland. The green village is considered a protected ensemble of a characteristic type of woodland-clearing settlement in central Swabia and one of the best-preserved village greens in Bavaria. The settlement’s history and layout go hand in hand here: the green forms the centre of the ensemble.

At the centre of the green stands St. Leonhard’s Parish Church, free-standing and surrounded by a cemetery. Consecrated in 1730, the Baroque building rests on older structures and defines the ensemble. The church contains frescoes and Stations of the Cross paintings by Dominikus Zimmermann. The village layout, architectural history and art thus offer different points of interest for a stay focused on Baiershofen’s local character.

Forest Trails and Nature Spots

Northwest of Altenmünster, a habitat network established by the Bavarian State Forests lies within the state forest. A circular trail along the Weisinger Forstbach stream passes renaturalised areas. The hut at Vopeliusstern and its redesigned surroundings also invite visitors to explore and linger. The focus is therefore quite different from Baiershofen’s village history: here, the forest and trail take centre stage.

Visitors can explore the forest at the shrub garden on Dreijauchersberg. The Altenmünster circular trail passes through the district villages. For the hike, Altenmünster, Süd bus stop and regional bus route 520 are useful travel information. Check the latest information from AVV before setting out.

Churches and Special Places in Violau

Violau, also a district of Altenmünster, offers further points of interest in cultural history. The pilgrimage church of St. Michael dates from 1620. The Bruder-Klaus-Heim in Violau has an observatory with a planetarium; the VDS Planetary Section’s annual Planetary Conference is held there. The church, observatory and conference represent different subjects, from historic religious architecture to planetary research.

When choosing a holiday apartment, your preferred focus for the trip can serve as a guide: Baiershofen’s village ensemble and church art, places in Violau, or hiking destinations in the forest. Organising your days away around these interests can help you search more purposefully for accommodation in Altenmünster.

More Destinations in the Wider Augsburg Region

The wider Augsburg region offers more independent ideas for nature and culture. The LandArt art trail in Bonstetten is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route; the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures there. The three-kilometre meditation trail leads from Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof on the edge of the forest in the Schwarzachtal valley. The district of Augsburg also has a well-developed network of cycle paths.
