For active days, a 13 km hike leads from Essing via the “Tatzlwurm,” past the Klausenhöhlen caves and along the Celtic rampart to the Danube Gorge. Along the way, there are magnificent views across the “Weltenburger Enge” nature reserve. Check route signs and transport connections locally. The Jurasteig also runs from Essing to the Three-Castle Town of Riedenburg. The two routes offer different ways to explore: the 13 km hike focuses on the listed stops and views, while the Jurasteig connects Essing in the direction of Riedenburg.

Boat trips also depart from Essing’s landing stage towards Riedenburg or Kelheim; some sail through the Danube Gorge. Bicycles are allowed aboard excursion boats departing from Essing, so you can combine a boat trip with a cycling tour. Check the current timetable when planning your trip. If you are travelling by train, the nearest station is in Saal an der Donau. From there, you can continue by bus via Kelheim to Essing, in the direction of Riedenburg. This wider perspective complements Essing’s museum themes with a broader sweep of history.

The cultural history of the wider Kelheim destination also includes Prunn Castle, known as the place where an original manuscript of the Nibelungenlied was found. In Kelheim stands the Befreiungshalle, commissioned by King Ludwig I as a memorial to the victorious battles against Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815.
