Adelschlag: Villa Rustica, Churches and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Adelschlag
Adelschlag combines archaeological history, distinctive church architecture and opportunities for active exploration. In Möckenlohe, a reconstructed Villa Rustica and finds are displayed at the same site; churches in Möckenlohe, Ochsenfeld and Pietenfeld represent different periods. There are also hiking trails, opportunities for horse riding and Magistrale Route II. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your interests in architectural history, art or outdoor activities.
Villa Rustica in Möckenlohe
The Villa Rustica in Möckenlohe was reconstructed over its original foundations in 1993. Objects found there are displayed on site. The combination of reconstruction and finds makes the site a tangible introduction to Adelschlag’s archaeological attractions.
Tours of the Villa Rustica can be booked for one to two hours. The price is available on request, and groups are limited to a maximum of 30 people. As schedules may change, check the date of your desired tour in advance.
Churches and art in the districts
In Möckenlohe, the Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary preserves parts of the medieval wall surrounding the cemetery, as well as a rectangular arrow slit. The preserved features also include a massive Early Gothic baptismal font and a Madonna dating from the early 14th century. Architectural traces and medieval works of art offer different points of interest here.
The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Ochsenfeld was built in the Late Gothic period and preserves several Late Gothic woodcarvings, including a figure of St. Nicholas dating from around 1500. In Pietenfeld, the parish church of St. Michael was built in the Romanesque period; the lower storeys of its church tower still date from that time. The churches therefore reflect different historical highlights: Late Gothic architecture and carvings in Ochsenfeld, Romanesque fabric in Pietenfeld and medieval details in Möckenlohe.
Hiking, horse riding and Magistrale Route II
Adelschlag lies on the edge of the Pfünzer Forest and offers hiking trails and opportunities for horse riding. For a more clearly defined hike, there is Magistrale Route II: this 18-kilometre themed trail is a circular route between Pietenfeld and Möckenlohe and passes through Adelschlag. One of the route’s audio guide stations is called “Urelefanten-Schädel Adelschlag Findspot” (“Adelschlag site of the prehistoric elephant skull”).
Here is a practical tip for the Magistrale I, II and III trails: they are usually signposted only at junctions. Bear this in mind when planning your route. The stated length and circular format of Magistrale II provide concrete guidance, while horse riding and the other hiking trails offer further ways to plan an active stay in Adelschlag.
Choose a holiday apartment to suit your plans
When looking for a holiday apartment in Adelschlag, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: the Villa Rustica and churches, with their artistic and architectural details, or activities on hiking trails and on horseback. If you would like to include a guided tour, you can factor its duration, group limit and price on request into your plans. This lets you choose according to your preferred focus without combining the different places and activities into a single itinerary.
