Wutöschingen combines a rich architectural and cultural history with a practical option for anyone who enjoys spending their holidays outdoors: the village of Horheim is home to a DSV-certified Nordic walking centre, while traces of the past can be found in Schwerzen, Degernau and Ofteringen, among other places. This means you can choose between exercise and discoveries relating to the town’s history during your trip.

Circular routes and difficulty levels in Horheim

In the “Eichberg/Wiggenberg” woodland in Horheim, the Nordic walking centre has six circular routes ranging from 3.5 to 12 kilometres. The routes are graded easy, moderate and difficult. This gives you two practical points of reference when planning: the length of each route and its stated difficulty level. If you want to make exercise the focus of your stay, you can treat this as a highlight in its own right; if you are primarily interested in buildings and historical traces, several other villages offer different points of interest.

Historical traces in the villages

The Trotte, on what is now Hauptstraße, is one of the oldest buildings in Wutöschingen. It was built in 1564. In Schwerzen, the distinctive Willmendingen Castle dates from a later period: Landvogt (district governor) Johann Jakob von Beck had it built in 1609. These different dates provide tangible reference points for the town’s history, showing that its buildings do not all come from the same era.

Schwerzen is also home to several other historical features. The present-day church was built in 1782 and houses a Stieffel organ dating from 1792. Nearby, the remains of a double castle from the Hallstatt period have also survived. The church, organ and castle remains each represent a distinct chapter in the area’s history. This gives visitors with an interest in culture more than one building to explore.

The hilltop church above Degernau is considered a landmark of both Degernau and the entire Wutach Valley. In Ofteringen, the Klosterschüer brings culture together with local community life: it serves as a small arts venue and is also used by local associations in the municipality. Marienburg Monastery is also associated with Ofteringen and is known for its gardens. The monastery produces pharmaceutical products using traditional natural recipes passed down over time.

Which holiday interests are you looking for?

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Wutöschingen, your interests can help guide your travel plans. The routes at the Nordic walking centre suit an active holiday, while the Trotte, castle, churches and castle remains offer a range of historical themes. The Klosterschüer and Marienburg add cultural and traditional aspects to the picture. You could start by asking yourself whether you would rather plan your days around exercise in the woodland or the area’s architectural and cultural history.

The villages and their points of interest offer a variety of options rather than prescribing just one type of stay. This lets you pair your search for a holiday apartment with a clear idea of what you want to do: which of these aspects would you like to explore further? For some, the choice between six circular routes with varying lengths and difficulty levels is the main draw; for others, it is the architectural history of Schwerzen or the landmarks and cultural connections of the other villages. Wutöschingen offers several distinct themes to choose from.
