The town hall building in Wellendingen was first mentioned in a document in 1258 as the manor house of the local nobility of the time. A fire destroyed the building in 1540; it was rebuilt in 1543. Its history thus encompasses three clearly identified milestones: its earlier use as a manor house, its destruction, and its reconstruction. Together with the church’s chronology, the town hall adds another sequence to local history: here, local nobility, fire and rebuilding sit alongside the church’s religious dedication and its later structural expansion.
Fasnet: From Historical Custom to Theater
One account of Wellendingen’s Fasnet tradition dates back to 1595: on Ash Wednesday, the parish priest hosted a women’s feast, and five measures of wine were also served to farmers and the Junker’s household staff. Fasnet plays and theater date back to the 19th century. They were popular with the local population and also attracted visitors from elsewhere. The historical record therefore encompasses different forms of custom: a community celebration and performances that drew audiences from beyond the town.
Winter on Altberg
When there is sufficient snow, the ski lift behind Altberg is scheduled to operate daily from 2 p.m. from December through March. Before visiting in winter, check whether the lift is running on your chosen date. The TSV Wellendingen ski hut is also located behind Altberg. During the winter months, it is scheduled to welcome visitors on weekends and, when snow conditions permit, on weekdays as well. Check in advance for current arrangements.
