In Rainau, Roman history and experiences at the Bucher Reservoir come together. The Upper German-Raetian Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, crosses the municipal area for about six kilometres and passes through the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen. You can plan your holiday in different ways, depending on whether you are particularly interested in historic sites, walking trails or the lake.

Roman Traces in Rainau

One striking site in the history of the Limes is the Limestor near Dalkingen. It is the only stone-built gate complex along the Upper German-Raetian Limes to date to have been verified through structural remains. A glass cube measuring 23 metres wide and 16 metres high permanently protects the original Roman structure. The gate is a structure on the stretch of the Limes between the Rhine and the Danube; in Limes Park Rainau, sections of the Limes and significant individual monuments are also preserved in a particularly concentrated area.

In Limes Park, visitors can climb a reconstructed watchtower and take in views over the Ostalb region. Guided tours of historic sites with certified Limes Cicerones are also available. If you would like to include this option in your plans, check the tour dates in advance. This lets you focus on a guided introduction to history, while the paths and preserved traces also offer opportunities for independent exploration.

Trails, the Lake and Nature Watching

For a hike, Rainau has a circular trail of about six kilometres that introduces visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Limes and the town’s Roman past. The Limes Park Rainau circular hiking trail is another option. At the Bucher Reservoir, the roughly 1.2-kilometre-long adventure trail offers a different kind of experience, with movement, sound and acoustic features, and is also considered suitable for wheelchair users.

The remains of a Roman bathhouse and a civilian settlement can be seen on the shore of the Bucher Reservoir. The bathing area has a 150-metre-long pebble beach. Those interested in nature by the water will find a purpose-built observation platform on the dam of the forebay, where the bird species found in the area are presented in words and pictures. Different themes therefore take centre stage at the same destination: Roman remains, time at the beach or birdwatching. If you plan to visit the bathing area, check the current conditions.

Limes Park also has a Roman-themed water playground for children. It complements the historic sites with an offering specifically aimed at younger visitors. When planning a trip with children, you can therefore make room for play and water alongside archaeological discoveries, without every stop on the trip having to cater to the same interests.

History in Schwabsberg and Choosing Accommodation

Schwabsberg also offers a historical point of interest: The church dedicated to Saint Martin was mentioned as a chapel in 1387 and elevated to parish status in 1749. The present building dates from 1733 and includes, among other features, Late Gothic sculptures of Saint Nicholas and Saint Sebastian. The dates tell of different periods in the church’s history, while the sculptures offer another specific reason to take a closer look at the building’s furnishings.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Rainau, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip. Do you mainly want to explore the Limes and Roman remains, hike the trails or spend time at the Bucher Reservoir? Then tailor your search to the places that matter for your outings. This way, you can choose accommodation to suit your own plans instead of combining different experiences into a single itinerary.
