Viticulture and the Legend of Dasenstein
The vineyards in the “Hex vom Dasenstein” wine-growing area around Kappelrodeck cover 180 hectares and are cultivated by around 80 winegrowing families. Almost 80 percent of Kappelrodeck’s vineyard area is planted with Pinot Noir. Both the size of the wine-growing area and a specific grape variety are therefore part of the local wine profile.
According to legend, the Hex vom Dasenstein gave Kappelrodeck wine its name. You can experience the legend on the multimedia legend walk using a Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone or tablet. The “Hex vom Dasenstein” wine cellar in Kappelrodeck is also considered a world of wine experiences. Visitors can also see an extensive medal collection in the wine cellars of Kappelrodeck and Waldulm.
Orchard Trail and Hiking Paths
The orchard trail runs through the municipal districts of Kappelrodeck and Waldulm; its actual starting point is in Kappelrodeck, below Brandrain. Along the trail, you’ll find a three-part information board, a biotope, wild roses and native trees, habitats for wild bees and honeybees, and stone-fruit trees bearing plums and cherries. Other shrubs and wild-berry hedges add to the sights along the route. The trail combines information with a variety of insights into fruit growing and nature.
The Dasenstein legend loop starts at Kappelrodeck train station, which is easily reached by public transport. This short, scenic hike leads through vineyards outside Kappelrodeck, across a landscape that shifts between forest and vineyards, and between mountain and valley. Another point of interest is the Kappelrodecker Hexensteig quality hiking trail, which connects the Acher Valley with the Rench Valley. A short hike linked to local legends and a route connecting two valleys thus offer different trail themes.
Rodeck Castle and the Dasenstein Natural Monument
Rodeck Castle is the landmark of the municipality of Kappelrodeck and was built in the 12th or 13th century. Dasenstein is a natural monument among Kappelrodeck’s vineyards. Below the natural monument, the Dasensteinhütte offers a place to rest, with seating among the vineyards. A historic landmark, a natural monument and a place to take a break each provide their own point of interest in the landscape.
The Wider Region: Ortenaukreis
Ortenaukreis lies between the Rhine and the Black Forest. Across this wider region, there are 23 nature reserves covering around 3,110 hectares in total, stretching from the Rhine plain to the higher elevations of the Black Forest. The Taubergießen nature reserve covers 1,695 hectares and is one of the largest nature reserves in Baden-Württemberg.
