Markelsheim: Wine, Trails and History
Accommodation in Markelsheim
Markelsheim combines working vineyards with distinctive buildings and trails offering a range of ways to explore. Around 90 hectares of vineyards are cultivated here. Wine shapes both the landscape and several specific experiences: the annual wine festival, a cellar tour arranged by appointment and a vineyard hike each offer a different focus. The town also has historic buildings and hiking trails of varying lengths.
Experience the Wine
The Markelsheim wine festival takes place every year one week after Pentecost. The exact date therefore depends on the date of Pentecost in that year. If you plan to attend the festival during your stay, check the date for your travel year.
Weingärtner Markelsheim e.G. organises private cellar tours for groups of six or more by appointment. A tour lasts about one hour, costs a flat fee of €80.00 and includes a wine tasting. Arrange the date in advance with Weingärtner Markelsheim e.G., as tours are by appointment.
Buildings and Local History
Distinctive details of the Historic Town Hall include a town coat of arms and small half-timbered oriel turrets. There is also a building with a clear historical context at the Tauber Bridge: the Renaissance chapel dates from 1848 and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
The bell tower was built between 1490 and 1494 and stands 48 metres tall. Its bell frame holds four bells; the oldest dates from 1522. St Margaret’s Hill Church was formerly the chapel of the Beguine convent on Engelsberg.
The wayside shrine in front of the Bürgerhaus is located at Hauptstraße 53. It is a cultural monument under Section 2 of the DSchG (Monuments Protection Act) and has documentary value because of its high-quality artistic design. At Hauptstraße 50, the portal and house Madonna are likewise of documentary value because of their artistic design and are classified as cultural monuments under Section 2 of the DSchG.
Hikes and Trails
Markelsheim has an extensive network of hiking trails; the suggested routes are between 7 and 20 kilometres long. The vineyard hike featuring the “Taubertäler Häcker” offers a more specific itinerary: you can sample top wines from the Tauber Valley along the way. The route is around 6 kilometres long, takes about three hours and has an elevation gain of 139 metres.
A considerably longer option is the 7th stage of the Way of St James. It runs from Markelsheim via Weikersheim and Laudenbach Hill Church to Niederstetten. The starting point is the Tauber Bridge, and the route is 20.4 kilometres long. Check trail markings and facilities for this stage separately before setting out.
The Hohenlohe–Tauber Jewish Heritage Trail also passes through Markelsheim. From Markelsheim, you can also explore the landscapes of the “Romantic Tauber Valley” and its surroundings along the “Romantic Road”. Alongside the hiking trails, the region’s cultural heritage and landscapes can therefore also feature in your travel plans.
