Botenheim brings together late Gothic church art, a local history museum offering insights into living conditions in the past, and opportunities for exercise and nature experiences. Sacred and secular buildings tell stories of different eras; trails and a guided herb walk add other points of interest. During your stay, you can decide whether cultural history, hiking or nature should take centre stage.

Church Art and Renaissance

The Protestant late Gothic Church of St Mary has a massive Romanesque tower dating from 1280. Its nave was remodelled in the late Baroque style in 1744; the church also contains a late Gothic Holy Sepulchre. The Romanesque tower, late Gothic church and late Baroque alterations to the nave give the building a layered architectural history.

Next to it stands the Teutonic Order tithe house, a three-storey Renaissance building dating from 1607. Together, St Mary’s Church and the tithe house represent different architectural themes: sacred building history on the one hand and Renaissance architecture on the other.

Local History in the Town Hall and Schoolhouse

The local history museum is housed in a town hall and schoolhouse built in 1837. Faithfully furnished rooms illustrate the living conditions of people in the region around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This brings regional history to life through carefully arranged rooms, not just individual exhibits.

The museum includes workshops showcasing historic crafts, agricultural exhibits and displays of traditional winemaking. Some workshops are fully furnished and demonstrate the crafts of saddler, wheelwright, locksmith and shoemaker. A collection of dolls’ furnishings and a large model railway for children round out the exhibits.

From May to October, the local history museum is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month. If you want to plan a visit, check the date before travelling and schedule your museum day within these opening hours.

Trails, Nature Conservation and Herbs

Botenheim’s lanes and quiet corners are a good starting point for hikes along numerous well-maintained cycling and hiking trails. The Zaber floodplain nature reserve is located in Botenheim, on Schleicherweg. Alongside the town’s historic sights, a protected natural area and trails offer other themes to explore during your stay.

On Botenheimer Heide, a guided herb walk led by a herb expert explores the diversity of local plant species and offers views across the entire Zabergäu. As a guided nature experience, the walk differs from exploring on your own. Check when the next scheduled walk takes place before making plans.

Wine and Practical Information

Botenheim is associated with mellow Burgundy grape varieties. There are nine free parking spaces on Teichstraße, opposite the Alte Kelter. As parking arrangements may change, check the information before setting off.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Botenheim, start by deciding what kind of trip you want: the architecture and museum suit a cultural history break, while the trails are ideal for an active stay. The herb walk adds a guided nature experience to the options. When planning, it is worth taking the museum’s opening day and the latest scheduled walk into account.
