In Heidenheim, the Museum at Hellenstein Castle occupies several rooms of the Lower Castle. Duke Frederick I of Württemberg had the castle built around 1600. Small changing exhibitions on historical topics are held in the former ducal stable. The building’s history and the changing exhibition themes offer different historical perspectives on a visit.

Another museum on the castle hill focuses on the history of mobility: the Museum of Carriages, Coaches and Carts is housed in the castle’s former granary. It documents the history of overland transport up to the invention of the automobile and explores travel and the movement of goods in towns and the countryside. This gives it a different focus from the castle rooms: here, the subject is transport and mobility, not the history of the castle.

Brenz Region: River, Heathland and Shepherding

The landscape of the Heidenheim Brenz region features karst formations, lively rivers, forests and heathland. The 52-kilometre-long Brenz River runs through the region. When planning your trip, both the river landscape and the karst formations offer distinct connections to nature.

The certified long-distance Albschäferweg hiking trail offers the chance to explore the region over a longer distance: it runs for 158 kilometres through the Heidenheim Brenz region, a cultural landscape of the Swabian Alb shaped by migratory shepherding. The trail is dedicated to the shepherds and their flocks. Here, landscape and cultural heritage go hand in hand. If hiking is the focus of your stay, the Albschäferweg offers a clearly defined regional theme.

The Eselsburger Valley also has particular ecological importance: it is by far the most valuable habitat for amphibians and reptiles in Heidenheim district. This distinction draws attention to the region’s natural environment, without reducing it to hiking trails or viewpoints.

Caves and Geological History Nearby

The Charlottenhöhle cave is in Giengen-Hürben, a destination near Heidenheim that can be reached on cycling and hiking tours. The cave is 532 metres long, one of the longest show caves in southern Germany and the longest accessible dripstone cave in the Swabian Alb. Using modern exhibition techniques, the interactive HöhlenSchauLand adventure museum takes visitors on a journey of discovery through geological history.

There, visitors can, among other things, crawl among bats, “carve” mammoth ivory, enter a bear’s den and take a quiz on archaeology and science. At the HöhlenHaus in the HöhlenErlebnisWelt, you can find information about the history of the Charlottenhöhle and the beginnings of human culture in the region more than 35,000 years ago. The grounds around the HöhlenHaus also include an adventure playground and a water play area on the Hürbe. The topics range from natural history and archaeology to interactive exhibits and outdoor activities.

The Steiff Museum is in nearby Giengen an der Brenz. It features a 15-metre-long Steiff snake slide, described as the world’s first walk-through Steiff animal. Another site of cultural history nearby is the Vogelherd Cave near Niederstotzingen: it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 9 July 2017.
