Heiningen: Trails, Forest and Local History
Accommodation in Heiningen
Heiningen offers various ways to enjoy outdoor activities and explore local history: from routes of different lengths and a singletrack trail to a historic walking tour. The frescoes in St. Michael’s Church and a leisure facility with Pit-Pat are also among the topics covered. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer to compare routes, explore the town or combine both.

Trails and routes in Heiningen
The 27-kilometre Voralbroute passes through Heiningen. The Voralb Nordic Walking Park offers four routes for everyone from beginners to advanced athletes. They all start at the car park by the Voralbhalle; the individual routes are 3.5 to 14 kilometres long. This gives you a choice of routes with clearly different lengths: the Voralbroute is longer than any of the individual park routes, while the Nordic Walking Park lets you compare four distances. Check the signs and current trail conditions before setting off.
The 1.6-kilometre VORALB HERO singletrack through Heiningen’s municipal forest adds a distinct trail option. Since 2024, it has been operated by the Bone Fackers e.V. association from Bad Boll, which is responsible for its maintenance, upkeep and safety. As operator information may change, check the latest trail updates before your ride.
The Rohrweg and the Heubachwegrunde are also hiking trails in the municipality of Heiningen. If you would like to explore on foot, you can include these named trails in your selection. Check their current availability locally before setting off.
Local history and art motifs
The Historic Town Walk comprises 21 stops selected by local residents, who also wrote the accompanying texts; most of those involved contributed on a voluntary basis. Information boards on building walls explain the town’s history, while QR codes link to further information from the municipality. The stops therefore connect the walk both to selected locations and to locally written insights. You can use the QR codes to explore individual topics in more detail.
The frescoes in St. Michael’s Church depict a representation of Saint Christopher, a rare depiction of Christ being nailed to the cross dating from 1398, and a “volto santo”—a depiction of the crucifixion with a clothed Christ. These motifs provide a tangible point of reference for local art history: alongside the dated depiction of Christ being nailed to the cross is an image distinguished by its clothed figure of Christ.
Another leisure facility was expanded in the summer of 2014 with an 18-hole Pit-Pat course. If you would like to include Pit-Pat in your plans, check the course’s current availability before visiting.
In the wider travel destination of Göppingen
The wider travel destination of Göppingen offers additional, distinct attractions. The Märklineum presents the more than 165-year history of the Märklin company and its products. The Löwenpfade in the district of Göppingen are circular hiking trails ranging from 3 to 24 kilometres in length. There are also four Löwentrails for mountain biking, between 16 and 30 kilometres long; they are particularly suitable for beginners and e-mountain bikers. This wider regional area therefore offers both a cultural and historical focus and a choice of routes of varying lengths for hikers and mountain bikers.
Choose the right search location
If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether Heiningen itself or the wider travel destination of Göppingen should be your main focus. In Heiningen, the options range from local trails and the singletrack to the historic walk and art. In the wider Göppingen area, you can also explore Märklin’s history as well as regional hiking and mountain biking loops. This helps you choose a search location based on the interests you want to shape your stay.
