Horb am Neckar offers several ways to explore history and landscape: a restored waterwheel tells the story of the milling tradition, a history garden brings together small monuments, and hiking trails lead through a variety of landscapes. When choosing your destination, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on discovering historical traces or also set aside time for hikes.

Mill History and Special Collections

Horb’s last waterwheel is located on the lower millrace and was restored in 1996/97. It dates back to a fulling mill belonging to Horb’s clothmakers, first mentioned in 1511. This tangible historical monument brings the local milling history to life. Information panels in the gearing room illustrate a milling tradition dating back to the 13th century. The two dates refer to different historical contexts: the long tradition of mills and the first mention of the fulling mill.

The Museum of Military History in the inner ring-wall tower was opened in 1987 by the Cultural and Museum Association. It can only be reached on foot. If you plan to visit, check current accessibility in advance. The Stone History Garden offers a different perspective on local history: this open-air museum comprises more than 70 small surveying, legal and transport monuments, although the collection’s size may change. Its range of topics also makes the garden interesting for visitors who are interested in small traces of everyday life and public order.

Hiking Trails with Different Features

In the Egelstal, the Horb-Neckar Valley circular hiking trail passes through a rocky gorge. The “Through Horb’s Lower Town” walking trail, by contrast, runs past the Kugler Hang nature reserve. Together, they offer different landscape impressions without promising the same hiking experience.

For a circular hike with a specified duration, the Muriweg is another option: it is 10.3 kilometres long, takes three hours and has 273 metres of ascent. These details help you gauge how much time a hike will take. Along with the rocky gorge section in the Egelstal and the walking trail by the lower town, Horb offers several reasons to get outdoors. The routes can be distinguished by the experience you are looking for: a circular hike with a specified distance and duration, a rocky gorge, or a walking trail by a nature reserve.

When looking for a holiday apartment, let your travel interests guide your choice of destination: in Horb, the focus is on the milling tradition, the history garden and a variety of hiking experiences.

More Places to Explore in the Wider Freudenstadt Destination

In Alpirsbach, the monastery and its imposing monastery church offer a special insight into architectural history: it is one of the few monasteries in the German southwest still preserved according to the principles of the medieval Hirsau Reform. The classic historical town tour takes in historic buildings and includes a stroll through the spa gardens. Two museums offer another way to explore the past: the Museum of Local History explains Alpirsbach’s development through selected collectibles. The monastery museum’s permanent exhibition, “Monks and Scholars,” displays clothing, letters, drawings, games and vessels spanning six centuries.

Freudenstadt itself offers different highlights. Its market square is Germany’s largest and features 50 fountains and arcades. The Panorama-Bad is a sports and leisure pool with a slide tower, toddler area, sauna complex, vitality area and outdoor pool. Families can also visit Experimenta, an interactive museum where visitors are invited to take part and try things out. For those who prefer to explore the outdoors, the Tannenriesen audio tour is a guided hiking route starting in Freudenstadt. Along the way, it introduces visitors to the Black Forest’s largest fir tree, carpets of moss and scenic views; rustic huts invite you to stop and relax. These examples from the wider destination differ thematically from Horb’s milling history and hiking trails.
