Hiking Trails and Views Around Owen
The Teck circuit starts at Amtsplatz, one of the most important squares in Owen’s Unterstädtle district. The railway station is within sight. The route follows narrow forest trails past the old glider hangar to Gelber Felsen, from where you can look out over the Lenninger Valley. Check local conditions before setting out.
Those wishing to explore a range of hiking destinations will find two named “hochgehberge” premium hiking trails in Owen: “hochgehlegen” connects Beuren, Owen and Erkenbrechtsweiler, while “hochgehadelt” runs through Bissingen, Owen and Lenningen. Routes and details may change; check the latest information before your hike. The trails described also differ in the towns they include.
The literary cycling trail, which opened in 2012, offers a different perspective. It follows the Lauter through Owen and passes the History House. Before setting off, it is worth checking local conditions. This gives you two different options for planning your day: hiking trails with scenic views and a route along the river.
Local History and Buildings
The History House tells stories about the plants and animals around Mount Teck, early settlements along the Lauter and Teck Castle. Its historical account spans the castle’s rulers, the founding of the town in the 13th century and life in Owen through to the present day. The literary cycling trail passes the site; the History House also offers a themed introduction to the history of the town and its surroundings for visitors arriving by other means.
Owen has had a historic town trail since 2011, created in collaboration with the Alt-Owen Förderverein e.V. At St Mary’s Church, you can discover a distinctive architectural feature: it was one of the first churches in Württemberg to be built as a hall church with a stepped roofline. Together with the history of the castle and the founding of the town, this offers a glimpse into different chapters of local history.
Bernhardskapelle also preserves a historical detail: large sections of its earliest known painted decoration, dating from the 14th century, have survived. The chapel is closed to visitors unless accompanied by a guide. Group tours must be booked in advance with Owen Town Hall; also confirm the current conditions there before your visit.
