Iptingen combines the Heckengäu landscape with a remarkable historical heritage. As a district of Wiernsheim, the village belongs to the area known as the “Platte”, the steep drop towards the Enz Valley. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Iptingen will find a starting point for a variety of days out: the surrounding area can be explored by bicycle on paved paths, several hiking routes lead through forests and countryside, and the buildings and local traditions in the village itself tell of a rich and complex past.

Exploring the Area by Bicycle or on Foot

A readily accessible way to get to know the surrounding area is the “Tour around all the districts” bicycle route. It passes through Iptingen and the three districts of Wiernsheim, is approximately 19 km long, takes around 2 to 3 hours and runs mainly along paved paths. The approximate figures help with planning the day without committing the trip to a particular speed.

The “Iptingen Half Marathon” running route also begins in Iptingen. It follows the Kreuzbach stream to Großglattbach and is also suitable for walkers. For shorter hikes, there are the 3 km-long Saupfützenweg and the 4 km-long Heutalweg. Also associated with Iptingen are the Heutalweg, which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes, the Grenzsteinweg, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and the Iptingen–Enzweihingen–Iptingen route, which takes around 5 hours. This gives you a choice between short walks and a longer hike, depending on how much time you would like to spend.

The Wiernsheim municipal forest also includes woodland in the district of Iptingen. The forest is used, among other things, for cycling, hiking, jogging, walking, horse riding and relaxation. This makes it possible to create a varied stay for a travel group with different interests: while one person plans a longer route, another can explore the village or the nearby paths.

Buildings and Stories from Iptingen

The Iptingen wine press was first mentioned in 1705 and belonged to Maulbronn Monastery at that time. St. Margaret’s Church is a particular eye-catcher. Its tower still incorporates the old castle tower, as well as a later-added half-timbered section with a clock and bells. A late Romanesque “St. Stephen’s Church” was built onto the castle tower at the site of a refuge castle with massive defensive walls, constructed around 1100 during the Hohenstaufen period; the complex is associated with St. Margaret’s Church in Iptingen.

The local history also includes the nickname “Mondrahägler”. It is associated with a legend about villagers who wanted to capture the moon. The Kreuzbach Hall contains the “Mondrahägler Fountain” and paintings. Those interested in historical traces can also incorporate the vineyards of Kappelhälden, Hohenberg, Hägelin, Wildberg and Schössen, documented from around 1700, into their exploration of the village’s history.

Another important historical focus is the story of Johann Georg Rapp. He was born in 1757. From around 1785, an increasingly large separatist group formed around the linen weaver in Iptingen. In 1803/1804, Rapp emigrated as a separatist from what is now the Iptingen district to North America, where he founded the “Harmonist sect”. The “Huber Tomb”, erected in 1830 in the Neoclassical style in Iptingen cemetery for his client, adds another specific building to the historical evidence.

Plan the Right Stay

When looking for accommodation in Iptingen, you can base your choice on the balance of outdoor activity and local history you would like. Those who want to try several types of hiking can take the different route lengths and approximate times into account. For a stay with a stronger focus on cultural history, the wine press, St. Margaret’s Church, the Kreuzbach Hall and the memories of Johann Georg Rapp offer various points of interest. This keeps your choice of stay connected to your own interests without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring the area.

If you would like to discover other places in the same area in addition to Iptingen, you can also include Serres and Pinache in your further travel plans.
