Hiking trails with a range of distances
The approximately 7.5-kilometre hiking trail starts at Mühlacker railway station, follows the Enz valley and passes Löffelstelz Castle. Near Mühlhausen an der Enz, it joins the HW 10 trail of the Swabian Alb Association.
For a longer hike, consider a different scale: the Northern Black Forest Edge Trail is 56 kilometres long. In Mühlacker, it runs past Löffelstelz Castle and through Dürrmenz to Niefern-Öschelbronn along the Eppinger Line, then continues to Karlsruhe-Durlach. The Eppinger Lines Trail, just over 40 kilometres long, follows the defensive structure between Eppingen and Mühlacker. It is signposted and has information boards. When comparing routes, bear in mind their different total lengths and paths rather than treating them as similar short circular walks.
Traces of the Eppinger Lines and Löffelstelz Castle
The Eppinger Lines are still visible in Mühlacker as recognisable earthworks. The first phase of construction included the two so-called Fürstenberg redoubts near Mühlacker. The defensive structure was built between 1695 and 1697 to counter the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV. Information boards along the hiking trail provide context about this cultural and historical heritage. Reconstructions of wooden watchtowers, known as Chartaquen, stand on the Sauberg in the Mühlacker district.
The ruins of Löffelstelz Castle, also known as Dürrmenz Castle, date from the 13th century and were restored in 2005 and 2006. If you are interested in local history, you can include the Löffelstelz Trail in your plans: it runs from the Kelter, past Löffelstelz Castle, to St. Peter’s Cemetery. Sixteen information boards along the trail describe the area’s history. This can help you decide whether you would like to include historical information in your hike.
The permanent exhibition at the Mühlacker Local History Museum displays building foundations, cellars, staircases and shards uncovered during the restoration of Löffelstelz Castle. The historic building, constructed in 1596, also houses the town library and an events room. This brings different cultural themes together: finds from the castle ruins and the historic building’s present-day use.
Open spaces, everyday life and other local areas
The Enzgärten are a place for residents and visitors to meet, as well as a recreation and leisure facility of regional importance. They add another aspect to a stay in Mühlacker alongside its historic attractions. Another listed cultural monument is the former SWR medium-wave transmitter mast, together with newer masts; it is privately owned.
