Weisweil: Rhine floodplains, water sports and local history
Accommodation in Weisweil
Weisweil sparks curiosity with its many facets: the Rhine forest and floodplains invite you to enjoy outdoor activities, water sports shape the scene along the Rhine, and local traditions and a distinctive inn sign tell the story of the town. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on exercise, water or cultural discoveries.
Experience nature on foot, by bike and by the water
You can explore the Rhine forest on foot or by bicycle. A hike with children takes about an hour—a useful point of reference when planning time outdoors together. The Rhine floodplains also offer opportunities for longer hikes and cycling tours. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you can plan a picnic by one of the small, hidden lakes. This gives you different ways to experience the landscape: a hike, a bike ride or a break by the water.
The Rhine is also part of Weisweil’s aquatic landscape. The Rhine lateral canal and the construction of the French Rhine hydroelectric power stations created a barrage. As a result, the Rhine is about 600 metres wide at Weisweil and has become a popular water sports area for locals and visitors. At the bathing lake on the Rhine, regular water tests by the Emmendingen Public Health Department found that the samples fully met bathing water requirements. If swimming is part of your plans, check the latest water quality information before your visit.
A trail through fruit varieties and local history
The fruit information trail is 860 metres long and includes around 108 mature trees and about 40 new plantings of various apple, pear, plum and cherry varieties. The new plantings are accompanied by information about their distinctive features, uses and soil and climate requirements. The trail thus combines a walk with insights into the different varieties and the conditions they need.
For another glimpse into local history, visit the inn sign in the civic hall of the town hall, next to the local history museum. It is considered Germany’s most beautiful and largest inn sign and was displayed at the Gasthaus zum Erbprinz in Weisweil until 1939. It depicts Karl Ludwig, Hereditary Prince of Baden (1755–1801), surrounded by various hunting scenes. Its former connection to the inn and the historical figure depicted make the sign a notable subject for those interested in culture.
The Weisweil Sculpture Trail is considered a special attraction in every season. The annual Pfingsthoppen brings a different touch: children dress up and go begging from house to house, much like on Halloween. The town’s cultural scene therefore includes both a trail described as a year-round attraction and a recurring local tradition.
Plan your cycling and stay
The Rhine Valley Cycle Route runs from Breisach station via Burkheim, Sasbach and Wyhl through Weisweil and on to Rheinhausen and Rust. For those travelling by bike, this named route places Weisweil within a longer sequence of towns. A holiday apartment in Weisweil is a good option if you would like to make these local attractions the focus of your stay.
The Weisweil Motorboat and Yacht Club offers guests several berths. If a berth is important to your plans, check availability directly with the club.
