Forest trails for activity and discovery

The Rollberg Forest Adventure Trail runs for 2.5 km along forest and nature trails. At 19 stations, visitors can actively and playfully learn about the forest ecosystem. This gives the trail a distinct focus: it is not just about the distance, but also about discovering how nature works along the way. The Rollberg Forest Fitness Trail offers a different kind of experience. Here, you can train your endurance, strength and coordination; together with the extension loop, it is about 4.5 km long. Both trails are accessible for the most part with a pushchair and with a wheelchair when accompanied.

If you would prefer to hike in a group, guided hikes take place regularly in Freiamt on Tuesdays from May to October. There is usually a shorter route of around 4–6 km and a longer one of around 8–10 km. This lets you plan your day around your preferred distance. The town’s four Nordic walking routes add up to more than 24 km, offering another way to fit some activity into your stay.

Crafts, history and insights into the town

The listed Schillingerhof Mill in the Pechofental was built in 1802 as a grain mill. It has been fully functional again since its restoration in 1997. Its history brings the craft of traditional milling to life during a visit to Freiamt. At the Freihof Museum in the district of Ottoschwanden, visitors can watch the schnapps distiller at work on the first Friday of each month. The Kniestein Chapel is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1866 below the Hünersedel. The Hünersedel Tower in Freiamt is closed until further notice due to structural defects, which must first be addressed through repair work. If you are considering visiting the tower, take this restriction into account when planning your excursion.

Regional products and little breaks

The Freiämter Farmers’ Market in the district of Ottoschwanden takes place on Fridays and has offered products from local farms since 1998. These include fruit and vegetables, eggs, cheese, honey, home-distilled schnapps, bread and farm-made ice cream, as well as other products. Opening hours are shorter in winter. A visit to the market is a good option for anyone who would like to discover regional food and products.

For a quieter break, the spa gardens at Kurhaus Freiamt feature a wide variety of plants, including a colourful perennial garden, peonies, evergreen and wintergreen shrubs, bulb plants, more than 1,000 daffodils and a heather bed. An 18-hole mini-golf course with individually designed obstacles at various difficulty levels is also located right next to the Kurhaus. This means you can choose between a garden visit and an active leisure activity in the same area.

Those looking to combine relaxation with warmth will find a sauna area at the Freiämter indoor swimming pool, with sauna infusions every half hour, a Finnish sauna at 90°C and a steam room at 45°C. Another option is the Kneipp water-treading facility right at the Brettental hiking car park; it is open to residents and visitors alike.

Nature around the Hünersedel

The “Kreuzmoos” nature reserve is located in the Hünersedel area at an altitude of around 700 m and covers 5.6 ha. Its landscape includes fens and wet meadows with rare plants such as round-leaved sundew, bogbean and marsh pennywort.
