Denzlingen offers traces of its cultural heritage in the old village centre, a church ruin on Mauracher Berg and trails for active exploration. The Glotter also shapes the town: it flows through Denzlingen from east to west, with historic bridges spanning the river. When choosing a holiday apartment, you might consider whether you want to focus your stay more on local history and museums, on cycling and hiking trails, or on both.

Church History, Art and Local Life

In the old village centre in Unterdorf stands the Stork Tower, the former Church of St Michael. Frescoes and paintings by Theodor Zeller adorn the tower. Storks have nested there again since 1993—a remarkable natural feature of a historic building. If you are interested in Denzlingen’s history, this is a tangible starting point for discovering other traces of the town as well.

The church ruin of St Severin is located on Mauracher Berg. The arch over its surviving Gothic portal bears the date 1497. The ruin of St Severin’s Chapel is a popular destination for an excursion and is used as a barbecue spot in green surroundings in summer. This historic site thus brings together a surviving portal and its present-day use as a summer meeting place. In Oberdorf, the Sackträgerbrunnen (Sack Carrier Fountain) recalls former mills. The sandstone ensemble stands right beside the Glotter and was created in 1974 by the Breisach artist Helmut Lutz.

Discover the Heimethues

The Heimethues is a museum at Hauptstraße 76. It includes the Otto-Raupp Room and a collection of agricultural implements. The local history museum also showcases traditional local crafts and Denzlingen’s cigar manufacturing. Kitchen and bedroom furnishings, household equipment, as well as Denzlingen costumes and uniforms offer further insights into ways of life and work in the past. A visit to the museum lets you explore different aspects of local history, from crafts and agriculture to domestic life, clothing and local traditions.

Explore on Foot and by Bike

The “Search for Traces – Discover Denzlingen” project features interactive information panels with QR codes at historic buildings. Topics range from geological formations and forest use to the church ruin on Mauracher Berg. If you want to do more than simply look at historic sites and are also interested in their surroundings and uses, you will find a range of topics to explore here. Denzlingen also has numerous cycling and hiking trails stretching from the Kaiserstuhl to the Black Forest. You can therefore shape your stay around outdoor activities and nature, or focus on the town’s cultural attractions.

There is a playground at the forest barbecue area in Einbollen. For families who would like to include a playground in their outings, this is a practical addition to the cultural attractions and cycling and hiking trails.

Market and Getting Here

A weekly market is held at the Kohlerhof in Denzlingen. The Rhine Valley Railway and the Elz Valley Railway meet at Denzlingen station. If you are considering travelling by train, the station is a convenient point of reference in the town. When looking for a holiday apartment, these different interests may shape your decision to choose Denzlingen: local history, museums, trails, a playground or its location on the two railway lines.

More local guides: Rheinhausen, Bahlingen, Waldkirch, Kenzingen, Elzach, Herbolzheim, Winden Im Elztal and Sexau.
