Viticulture and Experiences
The municipality lists 250 hectares of vineyards and describes Merdingen as the largest winegrowing community on the Tuniberg. At the traditional Gassenweinfest, held in historic winegrowers’ courtyards, guests can sample the fruits of centuries-old winemaking traditions. Church, Fountain and Tithe Barn
An over-life-size Immaculata sculpture by Johann Christian Wentzinger stands in a niche above the main portal of St. Remigius Parish Church. The Baroque Stockbrunnen fountain is also part of the town’s history: it was made in 1739 at the municipality’s expense by a stonemason who had previously been commissioned to carry out stonework on the church.
The 300-year-old tithe barn of the Teutonic Order was once used to collect and store tithe payments. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the building was adapted for various purposes. The former barn was restored and refurbished as a municipal venue for festivals and cultural events. Numerous celebrations organized by Merdingen’s clubs and the municipality continue to take place in the Merdingen tithe barn and its adjoining courtyard.
Another historic site nearby is the Roman bath. It lies north of Merdingen, close to the woods on the road towards Wasenweiler. Part of the bath building was first uncovered before the war.
Routes and the Regional Setting
The Bettelbrünnele rest area can be reached by walking for ten minutes along Biegärten road and into the woods. This specific route idea adds a woodland outing to the cultural and wine-related themes.
