At an altitude of 816 metres, Holzschlag lies amid red sandstone and granite, surrounded by dense forests. If you enjoy combining walks, nature and little discoveries on holiday, you’ll find several options here: a panoramic circular trail suitable for pushchairs, signposted hiking trails and a cycle route along a historic railway line. This makes it easy to plan your stay around your family’s interests.

Via Apis and Hiking Around Holzschlag

The Via Apis bee nature trail is an approximately two-kilometre panoramic circular route. It starts at the Holzschlag hiking car park and is suitable for pushchairs. There are 15 information boards along the themed trail, as well as a glass-sided beehive. At the starting point, you’ll find a playground, an information centre and parking.

Another hiking option is Circular Route No. 2 Holzschlag–Glashütte. It starts at Holzschlag village square and follows the bee nature trail, then the Vorderbergweg, Kohlweg and Bruggenweg to the Glaserbuck Hut. This is an unstaffed shelter. This makes the route different from Via Apis: here, the focus is on the signposted route to a shelter, whereas the panoramic circular trail is distinguished by its information boards and glass-sided beehive.

The Wutach Gorge is another possible destination for an outing: there is an access point to the gorge from the motorhome parking area at Holzschlag village square.

Getting Around by Bike or Bus

The Bähnle Cycle Route follows the historic railway line to Holzschlag. It then runs above Gündelwangen, past horse pastures, and offers beautiful views of the Wutach Gorge. It provides a different perspective on the surrounding area than the hiking trails. For planning your day, the focus here is not on route length or walking time, but on the cycle route and the views described.

Circular Route No. 3 Holzschlag–Gündelwangen can be reached from Neustadt or Bonndorf by bus on route 7258. If you’d like to include the bus service in your outing plans, you can consider this circular route as a separate option.

Glashütte and Local Produce

Holzschlag also has a historical connection to Glashütte: the small hamlet once belonged to Holzschlag, was first documented in 1296 and takes its name from a glassworks that operated there. The place name thus recalls a craft practised at this site. If you appreciate local history as well as forests and trails when travelling, you’ll find a tangible link to the hamlet’s past here.

In the municipality of Bonndorf im Schwarzwald, the Schwarzwaldimkerei & Brennerei Herb produces honey specialities, fruit brandies, honey spirits and liqueurs from regional ingredients. The farm shop’s range includes honey, bee and spirits products. This adds an insight into local produce to the area’s nature-related attractions. For more inspiration, you can also discover Saig.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Plans?

These specific interests can help you choose where to search for a holiday apartment. Holzschlag is particularly worth considering if you’d like to include the trails mentioned, access to the Wutach Gorge or the history of Glashütte in your holiday plans.
