Hofsgrund combines its distinctive high-altitude setting with historic sites and experiences centered on herbs and winter sports. You can tailor your holiday to a wide range of interests, for example by visiting the Schniederlihof, joining a guided herb activity or taking part in winter activities.

Hofsgrund at High Altitude

Most of Hofsgrund lies at elevations above 1,000 metres, extending south from the summit of the Schauinsland to Notschrei Pass. This gives the village a clearly defined landscape. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you want to focus your stay on cultural history, herb-related activities or seasonal winter sports.

The Schniederlihof and the History of Mining

The Schniederlihof in Hofsgrund was built in 1593 and opened as a museum in 1972. From the church in Hofsgrund, a signposted, easy-to-walk footpath leads to the farm over a distance of 750 metres. The historical date and the short, described walk provide a practical framework for planning a day out at the museum.

The Schauinsland Mining Museum tells another chapter in the area’s history. The mine workings, excavated there over more than 800 years, were used to search for silver, lead and zinc. They extend for about 100 kilometres across 22 levels, are considered the largest in the Black Forest and the Vosges, and feature the mining periods typical of metal-ore mining. The Steiber Research Group operates the mining museum; check with them about current visitor access before your trip.

Herb Adventure Trail and Guided Activities

The Herb Adventure Trail begins about 300 metres beyond the mining museum, passes the English Monument and the Eaton Cross, and continues to the Schniederlihof. This route connects several named stops with the historic farm. Guided tours and seminars on the diversity of native herbs and medicinal plants are also offered along the trail.

These activities include two- and three-hour tours from May to October. Available dates may change, so if you want to plan your holiday around them, check the current tour dates in advance. This helps distinguish a self-guided section of the trail from a scheduled guided tour or seminar.

Winter Sports and Equipment

In winter, Hofsgrund’s four ski lifts on the 1,284-metre-high Schauinsland offer an additional winter sports option. Lift operations are seasonal. There is also a sports shop in Hofsgrund that rents ski and snowboard equipment; rental availability may also vary by season. If winter sports are the main focus of your stay, take these conditions into account when planning and check the current offers.

More Activities in the Wider Oberried Destination

The wider Oberried destination also offers a range of excursions and activities. The Felsenweg quality hiking trail is 12.2 kilometres long and leads from Oberried through a rocky landscape at an altitude of around 1,000 metres down into the St. Wilhelm Valley. Along the way, there are panoramic views of the Dreisamtal valley and of Schauinsland, Stübenwasen and Feldberg. The Erlenbach Grazing Trail explains how grazing livestock enrich and maintain the cultural landscape and thus contribute to preserving specially protected habitats.

For mountain bikers, the difficulty of Oberried’s Schädelwäg trail is a key consideration: it is suitable only for riders with advanced bike-handling skills, as the steep sections cannot be bypassed. Another regional highlight is the cattle drive, which is the traditional climax of Alemannic Week in Oberried. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the event dates.

In the wider Oberried destination, there is a rest area with seating and a small kiosk at the Schniederlihof in Hofsgrund. During opening hours, drinks, coffee, cake and a small snack are available; depending on the weather, the kiosk may also be open on weekdays.
