The castle and local history

The well-preserved castle in the centre of Allmendingen bears witness to the era when the imperial knights of Freyberg settled there in the 15th century, holding the rights of lordship over the village and its court. The reference to these rights makes the historical connection tangible: it links the building to the authority exercised over the village and court at the time. The castle therefore offers a concrete point of connection to Allmendingen’s history for a cultural focus during your stay.

The forest outdoor pool and routes on foot and by bike

The Allmendingen forest outdoor pool has large, sunny sunbathing lawns and shady places to relax beneath old trees. Sun and shade offer different settings for a break outdoors. Alongside the hiking and cycling routes, it is another place where relaxation and time on the sunbathing lawns can shape your day.

The main route for each of the hikes “Across the Lichse to the Weite Valley” and “Across Hausener Berg to the Siegental Valley” is 11 kilometres long. The first tour takes 2 to 2.5 hours and offers an 8-kilometre shortcut. The second is listed as taking 1.5 to 2.5 hours, with a 7-kilometre shortcut. The same main-route distance makes them easy to compare, while the shortcuts and time ranges differ.

“Via Altheim to Lake Schmiechener See” is an 11-kilometre tour for walkers and cyclists; an 8-kilometre alternative is available as a shortcut. The “Cycling and Hiking across the Hochsträß” tour covers 17 kilometres. The estimated times are 2.5 hours on foot and 1.5 hours by bicycle; these times are estimates. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Taken together, the tours offer different distances and, for routes with times provided, different time frames. This makes it easy to factor walking or cycling into your travel plans.

The monasteries also offer distinct historical points of interest. The former Premonstratensian Abbey of Obermarchtal is in the Alb-Donau district; the monastery complex stands directly above the Danube and acquired its present form between 1686 and 1795. Blaubeuren Monastery was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1085. Today, it consists mainly of Gothic-style buildings dating from 1466 to 1510.

The Alb-Donau district has 20 circular “Ice Age Trails” hiking routes, 6 to 14 kilometres long and suitable for day hikes. The family-friendly “Ice Age Tracks” offer shorter routes of 1 to 6 kilometres, while the Reflection Trail is designed for multi-day hikes. Themed cycling routes also vary considerably in length: the “Ice Age Valleys” tour is 75 kilometres long, the “Berg Bier Tour” 115 kilometres, and the “Albtäler” cycle route 186 kilometres and has a four-star rating. These regional options give you more themes to choose from, while the castle, forest outdoor pool and routes described above are the main highlights of Allmendingen.
